Just as a wild guess (having screwed this one up myself).
You are creating a file in Word 07. You save it in Word 2007 for your document. You need to save it again as Word 97 and copy that file directly to your CD writer not the Word 97 version. Then it should open.
Also, his CD drive may not be working correctly. Or there could be a compatibility problem between the files created by your burner and his CD Rom drive.
The best solution is for him to install Word 07.
