I'm hopeless about things like this so I'm hoping one of the smart people here can help me.

This just started two days ago. Any time I try to open a media player, everything seems to lock up. Windows Media Player and Musicmatch Jukebox are the two I've tried. They won't respond, and after I try to open them, my IE browser stops responding too. I have to restart in order to connect to the internet. I ran AdAware and Norton scans, deleted some spyware, defragged and ran disk cleanup, but so far nothing has helped.

Anyone have any ideas? I want my mp3s :(

What OS of Windows? XP? 98?

What version of Media Player?

Have you installed any new software lately?

Windows XP. I'm not sure what version of MP; how would I find this out?
And I think my BF installed a new version of Adobe Acrobat.

I've had some trouble with them in the past, too. I think I finally had to uninstall them and reinstall. Check website for updates maybe. Not much help, sorry. (but no questions, either ;) )

Well running the program is out.

There are utilities which would tell you, Belarc Advisor would give you a list of everything that is installed and the version of any windows software installed.

You can find it at www.belarc.com.

Other than a virus, I have found nothing that would indicate that Media Player or MusicMatch have any incomparability problems with Adobe Acrobat.

You could also do a system restore to a day prior to when the glitch occurred. I've solved a lot of problems this way. It's in the control panel somewhere or you could find it through help and support when you click the start button. Good luck.

First thing I would recommend is a online virus scan from symantec.com (aka norton) the link is a bit difficult to find, but it's there and it's free to use.

The second is a system restore to the date which your music last worked.

Third, check for windows updates, more than likely you are using a older version of media player which is no longer supported. Download all of the updates you can from M$ ... then try it.

If that does not work, google the problem and most likely someone else has the answer, but beware, it may be in geekspeak. Don't try anything you do not feel confident in, and before you mess around too much, make a backup of anything really important that you do not want to lose!!

I hope you are not on dial up (yes, people still use it, I am one of them) because this will take some time. If that does not work ... sigh, off to the repair shop you go.

Hope that helps.

Carson, I was having similar problems with Windows Media Player. I have XP on my laptop.

I think it's a Windows problem. If you don't keep up with every little update it gets very unhappy.

So I downloaded Real Player and use it instead.

:D

Carson:
At the top of Windows Media Player there is a help tab. Click on the help tab. One of the options, the bottom one IIRC is "About Windows Media Player." The about tab will give you version nymber info.

But if the system freezes before he has a chance to do that...

There is also a problem with Nvidia video drivers. I have heard their latest drivers have freeze up problems (that I myself suffer from) and that reverting back to older drivers will help (which I haven't done).

Now, this might not be the exact problem, but it might be similar.

I have also had the suggestion forwarded that I should uninstall and reinstall WMP. I haven't done it yet...

Is this only when you click on the file directly? If so, open the player first, and then find the file through the player, instead of through Windows or IE.

I updated the new version of WMP and it works fine so far.
Figured out the problem was Music Match and uninstalled that after copying my mp3s over to MP. Thanks, everyone, for the suggestions. :)

carson! You're alive!

I don't think I'm any better with computers than you are, babe, 'cause I have no advice for ya. It sounds like the programs have been corrupted somehow. I hope someone offers something that will help your problem.

Starting with Media Player 9 Microshaft has built in compatibility conflicts with Music Match and several others.... It's got to the point where any time you do upgrades to Media player you have to uninstall and then reinstall Music Match......

This is not all Microsoft's doing.... They have a deal with the music and video industry to try and limit piracy and are getting paid for it.... Music Match and others don't have or allow you to turn off the ownership checking programs that limit what you can play on your computer.....

Thank you this has been a public service announcement. :D
