Need a pic resized for your Av? Post it here...

what are the max. measurements for an av anyways?
150 X 150 20kb

Note: the maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 150 pixels or 20000 bytes (whichever is smaller).

Welcome to Lit Devious101, keep posting - you need 100 posts to have an AV.

How the Hell do you resize these damn things anyway? I can get the pixel size right but I always end up with well over 20 kb.

The secret to getting under the 20480 byte (20KB) size limit is to change the "quality" or "compression" setting for JPeg format files in your image editor.

irfanview's default compression settings are usully sufficient for most pictures and it's a very simple program to use for resizing -- plus it's freeware.

Hi freaky,

For resizing I use Infranview as mentioned by some other folks here - it is free. Infranview.com

To post a picture/image in a post:

It cannot be a picture on your computer - those can only be done as attachments (like I did above with BlueDaisy's picture).

From the website where the image is, right click on the picture and click properties. When that window opens, then copy and paste the address, then when you open your 'post reply' here at Lit, click the IMG button (located in the vB Code area) and paste that address into the window. (Double check that there isn't a double shot of that http thing too, I seem to get that a lot.)

Once that address is there, add any comments you want and submit your reply.

Give it a shot..... and welcome to Lit.

To change it from BMP to JPeG, use the file/save as option and select JPeG from the File Menu, or you can use the Batch Conversion function to make a JPeG copy of the picture.

When you change the format of an image, you're actuallly creating a copy of the image in a different format, so you have to be sure of which image you're opening if your preferences aren't set to show the file type.

Thank you, Cathleen! I really do appreciate it. I've been wanting to use that pic for months. Finally had time to sit down and ask someone for help. Shoulda just asked first instead of trying to do it on my own over and over. duh!

Thanks for the info, Harold. I'll try to remember that next time. Probably won't, but maybe I'll at least have enough sense to come back here and look for the info I need. Nah...I always have to do things the hard way. lol

I would think that remembering the "Save As" function when you want to save a picture as a different file type would be fairly simple. :p

The nice thing about digital images is that you can always go back to the original and start over as long as you remember to save a copy before you make any changes.

True, very true. But remember...I'm the almost-techno illiterate Lit person. lol

Go to USER CP at the top of the screen
Click on EDIT OPTIONS
Scroll to the bottom to CHANGE AVATAR
Go to the bottom of the page and around there it should say upload custom avatar
Click the browse button to find it in your computer
Make sure it is 150 x 150 pixels or 20000bytes whichever is less
If it isn't you will get an error message and we can help you fix it.

Hope this helps.

I use a free program irfanView - you can change the properties to pictures.

You can give it a try, download from irfanView.com

Under 'options' you can change the extension to a jpg. If you still have trouble attach the picture here and I'll be happy to do it for you....... as will others I'm sure.
