I submitted my first story and it appears to not be accepted as it has not posted for days and days. I don't know what I've done wrong so I can't fix it .

It can take around 10 days.

As long as it still says pending on your submission page, it will be posted. It will only not be posted if it says rejected. Then you can click that link, and it will tell you what you need to fix in order for it to be posted.

The Valentine's Day Contest is going on right now, which means that regular submissions take longer to get approved because contest entries get first priority.

Also, don't click on the 'Preview/Edit' link after you've submitted (if it's still there). If you do, be sure to re-submit it or else it will be stuck in Lit limbo. Whatsmore, it will be sent all the way to the back of the waiting list.
