Set roughly ten years before the events of the original Star Trek, the series follows the crew of the USS Discovery as they discover new worlds and civilizations, while exploring the franchise's signature contemporary themes. The season-long storyline revolves around "an incident and an event in Star Trek history that's been talked about but never been explored".

*from Wiki*

Michael Burnham: First officer of the USS Discovery, referred to as "Number One". She is a human who was raised by Vulcans. The series' protagonist was not made a starship captain, like those of previous Star Trek series, "to see a character from a different perspective on the starship—one who has different dynamic relationships with a captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context". The decision to call her Number One was made in honor of the character of the same name portrayed by Majel Barrett in the original Star Trek pilot "The Cage".

It seems likely that the incident is probably a battle the Federation had with Klingon Empire at Donatu V. Donatu V was the inhabited fifth planet of its system. The system was located in the same quadrant as Sherman's Planet, Deep Space Station K-7, and an unnamed Klingon outpost. Ownership of this planet, as well as the rest of the region, was disputed between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire from the point of first contact through the late 2260s.

The inconclusive Battle of Donatu V, one of the few brush wars fought between the two powers during the Federation-Klingon Cold War, was fought here in 2245. The battle was inconclusive.

I hope that they aren't basing entire plotlines on the scant makeup budget of the original series and its effect on Klingon hairlines, or rewriting the canon because Shatner flubbed a line.
