naugh·ty play_w("N0032700") (nôt)adj. naugh·ti·er, naugh·ti·est 1. Behaving disobediently or mischievously: a naughty child.2. Indecent; improper: a naughty wink.3. Archaic Wicked; immoral.n. pl. naugh·ties One that is naughty.

[Middle English noughti, wicked, from nought, nothing, evil, from Old English nwiht, nothing; see naught.]

naughti·ly adv.naughti·ness n.Word History: The word naughty at one time was an all-purpose word similar to bad. During the 16th century one could use naughty to mean "unhealthy, unpleasant, bad (with respect to weather), vicious (of an animal), inferior, or bad in quality" (one could say "very naughtie figes" or "naughty corrupt water"). All of these senses have disappeared, however, and naughty is now used mainly in contexts involving mischief or indecency. This recalls its early days in Middle English (with the form noughti), when the word was restricted to the senses "evil, hostile, ineffectual, and needy." Middle English noughti, first recorded in the last quarter of the 14th century, was derived from nought, which primarily meant "nothing" but was also used as a noun meaning "evil" and as an adjective meaning such things as "immoral, weak, useless." Thus naughty, in a sense, has risen from nothing, but its fortunes used to be better than they are at present.

Watched a television commercial performed by William Shatner, (Captain Kirk) of the old 'Startrek', in which the word 'naughty' was used...it percolated around in my head for several days....

In the three and a half million words of fiction I have written, I don't think I have used the word.

Have you?

Hello and welcome...that sounds like a 'feminine' response, which got me to thinking, is 'naughty' only a chik thing? Hmmm...

I think it mainly belies an endearing term, "Naughty boy - naughty girl". I doubt it is used in any other context these days other than a softcore one or at least used in a context of fun and not really serious sex. Still, I see it can be used in BDSM - age play ... dominant play where there is a definite parent or teacher figure. Otherwise? Naughty seems like the name of a cartoon character to me.

Edit: Indeed, NODDY is a cartoon character in Portugal!

Embrace my childlike mind.

Well I think the word "naughty" is used in semi-seductive teasing in much the same tone the Shat used in the commercial. And I think it is often used when referring to women. I can't really think of an instance it's used with men.

"Ooohh you're so baaaad." and "Ooohh you're so naughty." are often used in the same situations with sultry tones. It tends to have the undertone of saying, "I like a little touch of adventure."

That and the Shat can do anything he wants ^_^ He's just cool.

Not that I can remember. If I did, it would probably be in dialogue, either to describe a child's minor misbehavior or with a flirtatious, sexual connotation as in the lyrics to Gershwin's, "Embracable You."

Don't be a naughty baby
Come to papa, come to papa do
My sweet embraceable you

Not that I can remember, no.

Sounds to me like it would be more at home in some British spanking story...

You're more than welcome, Big A. It's hard to find a Gershwin song I don't like. But for some reason, that one always makes me smile.

ps: Bonfils, good point. Been meaning to tell you how much I like your AV. It looks familiar. Can you ID it for me?

Yep. Love that word.

And remember, there's the fun British expression:

naughty bits...

as in, show me yours... :D

My baby often asks if I'm ready to be naughty and I consistently respond with and emphatic, "HELL YES!!!!!!!"

First, it's an adjective. "Naughtiness" would be a noun.

I've used it in a role-playing story when a woman played a part of a school girl being kept in detention. The "teacher" described her as naughty, and did things no teacher should ever do to a child. Another time, when a woman wants to be spanked, she has described herself as being naughty. I've never written a story where a man was "naughty" but I could just as well. He could role-play a school boy, and get spanked by the teacher's ruler.

I believe it would almost always be used to describe a woman or women, often in an alliteration such as "Naughty nurses".
