No one would ever understand his job, his turmoil, that once a year he had a task to deliver presents to the ones that believed in him. It was a curse, a punishment for something he had done long ago and now he would never grow older.
What people didn't know is that time stopped on Christmas Eve, thats how he did it, that is how he got round each house. Occassionally it would start again when he entered a house, for only for a short time. He could control it, but there was the risk the rounds wouldn't be completed, and that was not an option.
Santa always tried to be happy, he watched many kids grow up into good and bad people, some he remembered, some were just names on a list. However, Josie was different, she was a sparkle. He had first met her when she was four years old, she had woken in a timeslip moment, and seen him in her room placing gifts in her stocking. She had got out of bed and handed him a mince pie and a small glass of sherry. It was a simple act of kindness that he appreciated, and ever since he had made sure she was top of the list and had very good presents.
He had watched every year as she moved from cute little girl, to teenager, to college and now she was 28, and had two kids of her own. Her husband had left her, but she still believed in the magic of christmas, and Santa would allow a small timeslip each year to wish her happy christmas, and give her a hug.
He didn't have much company in the North Pole, and often got lonely simply looking after reindeer and managing the elves. Seeing Josie was the highlight of his year, and in the last couple of years, he had began to think of her in a different way. Occassionally he would watch her sleep before leaving her a stocking. She had become a beautiful woman, and he loved her, but knew they could never have anything more than the moment they shared.
This Christmas, he continued his rounds, but left Josie until last, he hoped he may have more than 5 minutes this way, without risking everything with a too long timeslip.
He entered her house, left her two kids their gifts, and then entered Josie's room.
She was under the covers, with one bare leg extending out. He could see the top of her red silk 'christmas' night gown on her shoulders. She didn't move, time was stopped. He longed to touch, smell, and kiss her. He knew it was dangerous, playing with fire. He calculated how long a timeslip he would need, he knew when he started it she would wake, she always did.
He took a breath, and from his pocket drew the time control device. He would have about 30 minutes, any longer and the whole notion of Santa would be at risk. He pressed the button, and suddenly her chest began to raise and lower with her breathing, "Josie" he whispered, and waited her response...
