This isn't exactly a "how to" and if this thread has to move so be it but I had this thought that I expressed to my gf about a Christmas gift idea. We each would go to a couples store (ahem...porn, toys, etc shop) and buy each other twenty or so bucks worth of couples goodies. I don't really have a problem just walking in and browsing but I wondered if any of you lit folks had any really good ideas of what I could think about. Anyways thanks in advance for any input, it's all welcome.

It's a good idea that you have but you have to talk openly about it first. So she or you don't end up too surprised when you open up your gifts. Let's say you buy her an anal dildo and she is definitly not into that, that would sure be a cooler. So start with the beginner toys where both of you feel comfortable with.

I agree with the not getting an anal toy, that would be kind of a surprise but things that are pretty safe and can be fun (or so I have been told) are things like the sex dice, the feathers... I think every collection should have some hand cuffs, but that is just me. If you want romantic get some of the massage oils or hersheys chocolate syrup from the grocery. These are all fairly safe gifts if you are looking to do something spontanious and with out her knowledge. They would be fun and fairly innocent, but definatly stay away from the toys until you know what the both of you like, and discuss it then. Good luck.

You'll get a lot more for your money online and with non-adult branded goods (e.g. regular massage oil vs. Kama Sutra branded oil) in general, which means you'll have more to try and she may feel more comfortable shopping in private. eBay's Mature Audiences section (under Everything Else) can be a good place to get a good selection of items on a limited budget, especially if you get multiple items from one or two sellers who will combine (and have reasonable) shipping charges.

You might also want to consider going to a thrift shop for things that can be used for light bondage, blindfolds (e.g. silk scarves) and sensation play (pieces of fur, feathers, different materials, even kitchen implements).

What do you two like, or are you interested in exploring? Does she have limits or strong dislikes?

Thanks for the input everybody! I will definitely look into online stuff too, that's a good idea that I just stared in the face for a while and never thought of. We have talked about it a little bit and this isn't like a completely one-sided adventure, she's buying me some sort of surprise too. I just was hoping that I could get outside the box so that hopefully we both don't present each other with massage oil and fuzzy hand cuffs or something. Does anybody have any recommendations for a kind of "starter" toy or something? We have discussed trying things like that so it wouldn't be coming way out of left field and be scary or anything but I just don't know much about it. Anyways thanks again! And feel free to keep up the input, it is all appreciated.

I would suggest looking for a fun sex game. Games can be a great way to explore each others fantasies.

In general, you're going to be safe with vibes. They can be used all over the body AND on both of you.

I'd stay away from any toys made out of "jelly" or "realistic" (cyberskin-like) material because they can irritate people, contain chemicals that could have negative health effects and are extremely porous so they can't be cleaned properly. They're usually cheap, and some great toys like affordable rabbits only come in jelly but they really should be used with a condom.

You might consider something like a multi-speed bullet vibe (shaped like an egg; a good one can be had for under $10) with a rabbit sleeve like this ($6 on that site, which is a good deal compared to other retailers I've checked out).

There are also kits for under $20 (again, check eBay's Mature Audiences section) that have several items bundled together, usually with some kind of theme, like light kink, anal beginners, romance, sexy games. Just make sure all of the items are okay quality-wise (e.g. size, materials, you'd purchase them separately) and there's nothing that's going to be offensive, like a disgusting flavor of lube/lotion (cinnamon and mint are generally harder to screw up and usually have wider appeal than fruit flavors, IMO).

General tips:

Novelty items like fuzzy handcuffs are generally overpriced and poor quality - you'd likely be better off with something versatile and cheaper, like silky scarves. Actually, a lot of toys are overpriced and crappy quality, so make sure you read reviews and learn about whatever you're considering.

In terms of vibes, it's generally wise to go with something that you think is going to be TOO powerful and has a variable speed, than something that might not be powerful enough. There are always ways to tone stimulation down, but you can't make a vibe that's lacking in the power department stronger. Something that takes less than 2 AA batteries is likely to be pretty weak.

Most women are going to appreciate your time and effort more than anything you can buy. You could just buy a game or card, but a handmade one is likely to be a much bigger hit. I think you'll just know when you find the right item(s); as long as you put effort into it and have added a personal touch, she's likely to be thrilled with the gift!
