Nature Appreciation

My intent was to catch a fish for dinner.....that is all I wanted.....a young Brown Pelican saw it differently.....he wanted my fishing lure, having caught a pelican once before I really did not care for giving this young pelican a lesson in how to avoid fishing tackle.....heck he was actively pursueing it....turn my back he is standing on the dock right behind me saying "Well?" in his posture. Hopeing to instill fear of man and hence possibly his redemption I swat at him.....to his programmed response it was...."he is throwing me a fish" and he would open his mouth and glare at me.....finally when I loomed over him in a menacing fashion his resolve melted and he left.....10 feet away glaring at me as he floated on the water........trying to sneak close to where I was casting my lure....."la..te...do...la...te...dum..." as he causally closed the distance hoping to catch me off guard.......I would switch sides of the dock when he got too close.....then he changed tactics.......he would swim under the dock hoping to get that lure......to him of course it was a little tasty morsel.........Okay....turn my back......there he is right behind me.....I went through the routine again....hovering over him making monster noises and uttering obsenities for I realized he was not going to leave and I was not going to get fish for dinner. he hopped in the water again, glaring at me....finally I gave up.....and sat down to watch the Lagoon......as I sat there
with my young pelican friend I watched 12 manatees swim by....I was
feeling sad because unless he is lucky he will probably die hooked by some fisherman or tangled in some fishing line......all because some kind person thought it was cute to feed him......I know some people do not think about the consequences of feeding wild animals but usually it does not end well.

So folks.....from my standing on my box......

DON'T FEED the ANIMALS!.......of course your dog or cat or hamster.....by all means.....
:D

J.R.; my cats find do the same thing to me whenever I walk out onto my patio. As soon as I get near to the container that they know holds the magical fish in the can; they act as your pelican friend. Even worse at times.
Caught your meaning about wild animals (pardon the pun) and know of what you speak. Who in Florida and the surrounding area hasn't seen what happens when humans feed creatures such as a gator? Human = food.
Thanks for the thought dear and now, go feed your animals! ;)

Perhaps tomorrow I should swish for fish using the wish plate of Ish.

Perhaps tomorrow you'll be too hungover to fish for anything but the blind to shade the light from your eyes. ;)

-kym- luv ya! :D

this morning i watched the sunrise from a brilliant yellow and orange to a beautiful pink as the stars faded and the dark night sky turned into blue, the kookaburras greated the morning with their infectious laugh. another beautiful morning in australia.

Eureka! A drink, me thinks you have planted a seed......
Luv ya too Kym, you tell those cats who is boss......did me a lot of good when I was a cat owner.:D My cat hated my girlfriend...go figure....would sit there and glare at her.......and of course my girlfriend was allergic to cats so....every feline I have ever seen does the rub around the legs thing to her and purrs.......no doubt it is a conspiracy..."Take that you bitch!....oooo I cannot wait to see the hives!" My cat was a good sport and went to hide leaving her alone but I am sure he told his friends.

Sounds wonderful logan ross, I would love to make it to australia someday, must come from growing up in Melbourne Florida....which got it's name from a colonist who had come from Melbourne Australia....a woman....
Okay, I have watched all the nature shows and am fascinated too but still....:)

Our best sunrises and sunsets here in Florida come from either forest or brush fires and when the windstorms in the sahara desert lift into the atmosphere massive amounts of dust which drift across the atlantic......serious......sometimes it is thick enough to coat your car....amazing when you think about it......

>>groan<< Wish I had forgotten about the drink! :(
Your freshly baked bread and brewed coffee sound wonderful to both my head and empty tummy, John.............I'll be right over! :)

Think I'll ride on my bike to the beach today and watch the majesty of the waves as they tumble onto the shore. Its a lovely day; the sun is warm and bright and a cool breeze is blowing off of the ocean.

-kym- looking for a cup o' joe and a piece of toast :p

You are right there Kym, it is a beautiful day...I looked out the window and watched manatees swimming by a daily occurence it seems, I am working in the yard.....I hear warblers singing and chirping....the butterflies are out..I got buzzed by a Giant Swallowtail and the Sulfured Butterflies are around.....I watched 12 Blue-crowned Parakeets fly by.....even the work I am doing is Zen.....I am pruning some trees.....thinning the canopy.....Twigging is the term from what I understand....(Nope.....ya'll have devious minds...not friggin Twiggy)....it all ends up aesthetically pleasing to the eye and is healthy for the trees....the sun feels great.......spring has sprung in Florida, at least in this part......I may have to lay off work and go fishing later on......maybe my pelican friend will be gone......he...he..

My God the orange blossoms are divine.......I love that fragrance.....
Had great fun watching a Spicebush Swallowtail butterfly laying her eggs on the bay tree in the yard.....She was busy......a small flock of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers drifted through the yard crying their wheezy calls....BzzZZZZZZzzzz.......The males should start singing soon.....I had one a few years ago in the grapefruit tree in the backyard singing his heart out, at the time I could not for the world of me ID that bird.....I have since experienced it often in the wild......I love it....looks a lot like a small mockingbird singing just as sweetly too.

what a great thread..... someone mentioned earlier that they didn't notice nature until becoming older....me too... I think thats the way for lots of us......but once I became aware I've likened my love of nature to that of a Higher Power/God..... this thread is quite meditative.... I've sat and read an entry and then meditated upon the sight mentioned...... thanks everyone... I shall look forward to more entries.... as well as posting too....
of late our sunsets have been so very colorful....the air even seeming to fill with color...pale violet, pinks so many peaceful colors....

thanks again for the great thread.....:rose:

Thank you Cathleen,
we will be looking forward to your visits......nature is the closest thing to a higher power I have.....as I am able to focus on it better I see more than when I was a child. .......I have not been out lately for a sunset......I must do so......yours sound wonderful....I love sunset and dusk....one of my favorite times of the day.:)

Today it is the coffee......appreciating the nature of coffee.......how it clears the cobwebs.........puts a shine on my diminshing intellect......brings the universe into focus..........Sigh! I better drink a gallon today.:)

Fortified with coffee, let me tell a tale.
After my last posting I stumbled to the kitchen for a cup of joe....I looked out the window and low and behold there was a mass of birds out on the Indian River Lagoon close to shore.....Looking closer I see Double-crested cormorants, Brown Pelicans, Royal Terns, Ring-billed Gulls on the shore are Great Egrets, Great Blue Herons, Snowy Egrets, Litttle Blue Herons.

The cormorants are in a mass floating parallel to the shore...individuals are sticking their heads underwater and beating the surface of the water with their wings and diving underwater when a fish is spotted, apparently many fish are being frightened pressed against the shore by all the numbers of cormorants beating the water where the pelicans were scooping them up, and some fish were actually leaping onto the shore where the Egrets and Herons were snapping them up. In the meantime the Gulls and Terns are wheeling around and flying diving to catch any fish that surfaced.
All this activity was an amazement to me. The cormorants obviously started it and all the other birds seeing opportunity used it to their advantage.

I witness this once before where thousands of cormorants acted in this way...
I forgot about my coffee for a little while....he..he...

Here is another good one I was just writting a good friend about is ......

Silence, when was the last time you heard true silence, unpolluted untainted silence.....<laughing> sometimes I have true silence when I most desparately want to elucidate. And god forbid I should ever try a pick up line,
A beautiful face always brings me into silence, maybe it is awe.....it is the inner beauty the captivates me........holds me there in a stuperous state making very good first impressions :D

See attention deficit is hell....where was I? Yes silence! The is only one place in my county where you may find it at...... the Three Forks Marsh on the St.Johns River, there in between the airplanes one can hear it.....with nothing but the wind punctuated by occaisonal bird calls ......it settles on you like a blanket and you become enthralled by it, there is nothing out there but you and a vast expanse of sawgrass and blessed quiet, like an old friend you remember it and wonder where it has been.

not far from my home is a lovely walk....leading to a river... its always quiet there just the soft sound of the tide coming or going... and the birds and other animals..... i'm looking forward to going there soon.... the weather is getting better up here and the birds are returning.... everything is coming out of hiding....

Sounds like spring is stirring in your locality as well.:) I love the sound of the waves.

A wonderful resurrected thread!

In my second year of living in Omaha, I realize I do live in the "city limits" (took me a while to realize this, coming from New York City!). It only takes a few moments to drive to the farmlands, which is still an impressive sight for me.

I still love the BIG, wide sky! Waking up each morning, listening to the various birds chatting about, is still a welcomed novelty to me! (No cars honking or sirens blasting!)

Also enjoy the rabbits, squirrels and chipmunks we occasionally see prancing about!

I love it here!:rose:

I live in the city ... the urban sprawl which is any large American city anymore ...

yet just a few miles away the high plains of my city suddenly rise up, higher and higher, until there are no trees, just the bare rock, lichen and moss ...

The sheer immensity of this sudden transformation is inspiring every time I see it ...

Hi SS:rose:

Did you once post pictures of a hike you took (I may be mistaken, but I remember enjoying shots posted in the TC thread that were gorgeous views!)

Good morning everyone....

there is a stillness this morning.... cloudy and almost wants to be foggy.... sort of a heavy air feel here.... it slows things down in my head.... and seems to quiet everything just a little.... which is so needed.... enjoy the day all.... be well
