I wonder if you could help me.

I would like to do an activity to improve my students' vocabulary. To start with, I need as many unusual names for colours as possible, for example words like cerulean or azure, crimson and scarlet. Can any one give me any more?

I figured because erotica can be a very descriptive genre, you guys would be good to ask.

Thanks in advance!

hope it's helpful

I would try a paint or mascara supplier's web site. Specifically the color sample pages.

What i'm looking for specifically are words that are unusual, but have made it into the lexicon enough that they can be used in place of a more common colour, rather than those crazy paint names like 'Moroccan sunset' or 'vanilla dream'

Mocha, raven and vermillion are perfect -thanks Keith D and Lovecraft

oooh I like this thread

Most of my favorites have been said!

Alabaster, ivory, ebon.

Then there are metallic colors like rust, copper, bronze.

Turquoise, teal, chartreuse, fuschia, mahogany, jade, olive, rose.

The human experience of color can be so vivid, it is one of the most enjoyable aspects of sensual writing... especially since some words which are not really colors evoke such a common experience of color, like moss, or cream. Purportedly we recognize colors well in order to identify whether fruits were ripe.

There's puce, but that gives me a sour, puckered-lips feeling. I'd use it for someone showing up to a party without having absorbed the dress code for the party.

When I was a child, my grandmother's favourite colour was sky blue pink. :)

Viridian. Alizarin crimson.

"Her eyes were cobalt red/Her voice was cobalt blue..."

I've always rather liked 'carmine' to describe a deep, lustrous red, as in 'her luscious, vivid carmine lips...'

I recommend you have your students buy one of those 64-pak boxes of Crayola Crayons. You know, the one with the crayon sharpener built right in to the box. That way, not only do your students have a list of exotic color names, but they also have real samples of the colors to burn into their memories and with which to create works of art their Mom's can proudly display on the refrigerator door.

My main FMC’s eye color is celadon. It’s an important plot point.

Blue is a significant color in my stories, so at one point, a MMC explains how many varieties of blue he’s become familiar with: some of the more interesting shade names were mizu, zanzibar, skobeloff, lapis, glaucous and cornflower.

I've always liked "flaxen" for light blonde hair. I also like "honey," "buttercream" and "golden" for blonde.

My wife is a redhead. She is not a "ginger" more towards an "auburn." When younger she was "cinnamon" or "copper."
