Nail Polish

I put on a new top coat every day, then change the color once a week and start over again.

I do two coats on Sunday and then another coat on Wednesday, start over on Sunday.

There's supposed to be something about changing the pH balance of a nail and prepping it so polish holds (haven't seen anybody use it)

I've tried home gels, but the problem with them is that they shatter and craze.

I've found that the smoother the nail, the quicker the polish peels.
I use the 'rougher' side of a nail buff-pad and go over my nails with that first.
Also, wear gloves for washing up, laundry, etc.
And always, ALWAYS use the best polish you can afford. The cheaper stuff never lasts long.

I just want to say that I admire all of you who wear polish. I LOVE the look of nail colors, but for some weird reason I can't stand wearing it. I feel it on my fingers and it makes my fingertips sweaty. I guess it's a good thing, otherwise I'd have a huge collection of colors by now.

It's funny, when I go to the store and buy a new wonderful color, it's always the same color.

I have all wierd colours..... blue, yellow, green, glitter-silver....

Also, I just thought of another thing to help keep polish on - try and always use the same brand of polish and top-coat. For some reason, using different brands doesn't work so well.

I'm at the keyboard all the time, so my nails are short. Dark colors make them look stubby.

When I look at my clothes they're all maroon and black. When I look at my nail polish it's all pink or light coral.

Earlier this year I did some fake nails and I really liked them, but I just could not...stop...messing with them.

I just ordered a white nail pencil because it seemed like a cool idea, quick touch up for under the nails for French manicure touch ups.

It's crap. Don't bother.

I'd do better with liquid paper or chalk.

I am one of the lucky ones whose nails just don't break, so I have never had fakes.
They are so strong, I need a set of male clippers (those huge ones with lots of leverage) to cut them!
It's wierd because my hair isn't strong - breaks and snaps easy - and I always thought the two were somehow similar.

Yeah, that's part of the problem I have with growing them. If I grow them more than maybe 3 mm, they will break, and not break at the nail line, but break halfway down the nail about 20% of the time.

I usually get pissed-off at the length when they get to around 15mm long.... then I attack them with the clippers.
But they grow so damn fast!

I used to go to the salon for fake nails, but the risks of fungus and infection are just too much, so I just try to keep them short and clean and obviously...pink or light coral. Sometimes it's a shimmer pink or light coral, when I get really daring.

Yeah - I've seen some horror infections!
For this reason, I do my own pedi's too.

It's why I don't dye my hair or perm any more. Ideally I'd like healthy, and I definitely don't want damaged.

Light nail polish helps me also because if I see a chip...I can hold myself back for a short amount of time...but eventually I will lose my battle with self control and scrape it all off.

I am afraid of pedicures but eventually I imagine I will get one.

What does one do if you get a nail fungus?

I have a friend, a long legged Vegas blond who I have watched paint her toe nails once a week and top coat them every other day. I have never seen them look bad.

They're really difficult to shake. There are things you can do, but many of them are completely ineffective. There are liquids and creams that require twice a day application and still might not work except for affected edges.

There's a 7-day nail polish with antifungal properties you can use as a base coat, but if it's deep under the nail, you probably need to see a doctor. There's stronger prescription stuff.

That's where I'm leaning. Only it's just every four days. They do look much more ragged by Saturday. I might think of the two day thing and see how that works.

Every two weeks is not often enough because once the varnish leaves a blank space between the cuticle and the color, I'm also scraping it off as a bad job.

The common mistake people make when doing their own nails is applying it too thickly. Try two or three very thin coats with a 20 minute dry time in between. I find if I apply it too thickly it tends to peel. That being said, I rarely wear nail polish on my fingernails. The thin coats has worked for me in the past when I have. I have to agree also with an earlier poster, buy the most expensive polish you can buy, it really is better. Top coats help as well!

Yes, I can back this up. This is why if I'm doing several coats in a week, I'll just start with a base and one layer of color, then apply more color later in the week.

If I do it all too thickly, it will peel off like a sheet of paint.
