N Korea warns US of pre-emptive action

North Korea has warned the United States that any decision to send more troops to the Korean peninsular could lead it to make a pre-emptive attack on American forces.

The threat to strike first against US troops in the region came from North Korea's foreign ministry deputy director, Kim Pyong Gap.

I don't really care where you go to get your numbers. I respect the fact that you're a smart guy and military hardware is a passion of yours. The point is that you have a habit of wanting to win every argument so badly that you tend to try and drown people in statistics, and it gets tedious after a while.

Having been in the military and knowing a little bit about training and morale, etc., I know there is more to a fight than the sheer numbers of troops, cannons, planes and tanks. Everyone thought Soviet tanks were badass...right up until they met the M1A1, for example.

That was my point. I wouldn't call the Iraqi T-72's "shoddy", but everyone except the U.S. army seemed to think they could give the M1 a fight. They turned out to be no match. Obviously the T-62 is much less a threat than the 72.

A very old tank, but not crappy enough to fall asleep when one is about, they could sneak up from behind and take an M-1 out at close range with a shot to the back of the turret where the armor is thinner like our M-4 Sherman's did to German Tiger tanks in WW2.

The T-72 is pretty crappy, it uses an autoloader for the gun that is so unsafe it has been known to tear the arms off of crew members and stuff them in the bore of the tube like it was a shell. The ammunition is all stored in the crew compartment so when penetrated by an anti-tank round the secondary explosion is so catastrophic that the whole turret has been known to pop off the tank 30-feet into the air!

They would never, ever get that close. Between aerial surveillance and ground radar, and thermal imaging sights we see them miles away, and then kill them miles away. If I'm remembering right the M1A1/A2 has a range of something like 4000 meters with something like a 95% first hit percentage.

Thermal imaging sights are like long distance TV. I was sitting in an M1A1 one night, looking through the sight at an APC that had just stopped after a long road march. I could see every hot bearing in the wheels. I could see the faint heat signature of pistons in the engine- through the 1.5" thick aluminum alloy armor and through the engine firewall which is about 3/8" aluminum.

That's why we fight so well at night. To everyone else it's night, but to us it's just like a watching Tv in a dark room.
