Mystery and the Macabre

o_O been awhile since you read that one?

It's not really feline revenge: a gypsy boy's kitten goes missing, he curses the town, all the cats disappear, they pass a law never to kill cats again, because...

"In Ulthar, before ever the burgesses forbade the killing of cats, there dwelt an old cotter and his wife who delighted to trap and slay the cats of their neighbors. Why they did this I know not; save that many hate the voice of the cat in the night, and take it ill that cats should run stealthily about yards and gardens at twilight. But whatever the reason, this old man and woman took pleasure in trapping and slaying every cat which came near to their hovel; and from some of the sounds heard after dark, many villagers fancied that the manner of slaying was exceedingly peculiar."

I said its a revenge story. Meaning something had to happen to the cats first, no?

I hate The Black Cat. I mean, I enjoy that the guy gets his comeuppance in the end, but that poor cat! 😢

Now see, HPL worshipped cats, that would have never happened in his stories.

...see it did happen in each story, just Poe used more detail.

I didn't have a problem with Poe's use of the cat. It was the engine of the assholes doom. So it got its payback.

Refresh my memory though...the cat does survive does it not? Its been a long time since I read it.

If anyone is interested there is a cool animated movie on Netflix featuring versions of a few Poe stories. I can't recall the name of course because...I really think I'm losing it these days.

In Poe's? The first one dies, and then another one very similar enters the story for revenge.

In Lovecraft's it's assumed the kitten is dead, and the boy take revenge with his curse.

Would love to stay and play LC, but the house guests are awake, and I am in desperate need of coffee...

The cats eat the old couple. I'd class that as "revenge" :)
