I did them and filed them on the net. First time ever doing it and I will NEVER go back to H & R Block. They fucking ripped me off last year.

Out of curiousity I did an amended filing for last year.. and found out that I overpaid. H & R Block had me self employed.. and I'm not. So I paid taxes when I wasn't supposed to.

I'm getting back a little over $2500 this year.. and I'm getting back $800 from last year.

To damn bad it's already spent. I could think of a few things to blow this money on.

I'm in the process of doing Mr Freakys for this year. And his amended one from 1999. I'm hoping he gets some money back this year... because he owes them for 1999.

Was planning to use H&R Block for the first time this year.

What to do now?

ugh.

taxes.

last year i did them online and something got screwed up and they didn't get one of the forms they needed and it was such a pain in my ass.

this year will be better...if i can make out this damned form here...

Good for you! Did you use software like TurboTax or an online service?

I have been using TurboTax for the last 4 years, I can get my taxes done and filed in under 2 hours for roughly $30 after the rebates. Why anyone would go to H&R or the like is beyond me. I can get mine for free at H&R (courtesy of a family member) and I still prefer doing it myself.

Reality check: the only time I ever got audited (and slapped with a $800 tax bill) is when I was self-employed and had my taxes done by a CPA. Go figure.

This is where I went. A friend suggested it. It's easy to use and they walk you through it. It's online turbo tax. I was looking into buying it.. and it was $29.95 to do it online. I might end up buying the program though. Instead of paying the $29.95 each year.

There was a thread several weeks ago about a spyware program embedded in TurboTax. If I recall correctly, un-installing TurboTax does not remove the spyware program.

This is why I haven't purchased it yet.

It willl still run you $29.95 each year if you use the software program. If you buy Turbotax Deluxe it is $39.95, but there is a $10 rebate AND you can get a copy of the state sortware for free after rebate (not sure if you have a state tax). You get a free federal electrinic filing too (after rebate of $14.95).

Nice part about TurboTax is that next year's program will import all your data from this year. Makes it fast and easy, helps avoid pesky typos too.

The only reason I use H&R Block is in case I get audited. I am not saavy with money, nor do I handle much of my own accounting. Doubtful I will use them again, I just don't get a professional vibe there. Perhaps I will try turbotax next year.

I have a small question? Does an online service guarntee your taxes if your are audited by the IRS? I"ve never dealt with it but many of our customers have mentioned turbo.

Yes they do.

Bigdog-Well then.. I'll just continue to use their online service..No we don't have state taxes to deal with.

You'll have to update it every year with the new laws, tax tables, and state data. I bet you're better off using the online version.

And, if you get money back, unless you really, really *need* the enforced savings plan, the IRS pays you no interest on your money. You might want to change your exemptions.

I've thought about changing my exemptions. But I kind of like the money in one lump sum. It's like a bonus :D

A bonus that is interest free for Uncle Sam. The goal is to owe a little at the end of the year.

Well that use to be the case when a blind monkey picking stocks would make you 50%. Now at least 0% is better than my -80% on the stock bubble bust from a few years ago.

I'm confused.

I was looking closely at my W-2. I didn't pay any Federal taxes this year or last. I only paid into SS and Medicare.

Half of my pay is paid to me by the state of Washington. (I get a W-2 from them)
Half comes from my mom..paid to me monthly by check (I'm honest and claim it all).

I have one child (dependant) that I claim. I don't have child care expenses so I can't claim those.

Why do I get such large amounts of money back?
