i can be usieng my mouse then for no aparent reason the mouse frezes, and I have to unplug it and plug it back in to get it to work again.

this has been happening for awhile now.
and sometimes it's a permantnet lock up so unpluging don't work and I have to reboot.

anyone know what I may do to solve this?

Seems like when this happened to me I just had to get a new mouse to fix the problem. Otherwise, I don't know. Hope ya get it fixed. :)

Sounds like a bad mouse. Or like the mouse port doesn't connect properly to the mouse.

Is the mouse ball and all that stuff dirty? Take the ball out and look at the rollers and stuff.

Check your drivers

I am a computer tech in the navy and since you are able to use it and then you lock up, it could easily be a driver problem. If you want more info email me and I'll be happy to help

oh lol

I should have stated I have a laser mouse no movieng parts so no it's not dirty it's not dusty or shit like that.

I have to agree with steve on this one... It sounds like a driver issue to me. Although that it does seem odd that you can use it for a while and then it goes.

Try putting in a different mouse (preferably with a cord, so no drivers will be required), and see if it locks up then. If it doesn't, then you narrowed it down to your laser mouse (either driver or the unit itself).

Hope this helps

mine has a cord... it don't have a ball. it's a usb/pc2 uses a cord

I have noticed that sometimes the lazer "Eye" can get ...um crusty...so Erm...maybe cut down on the messy stuff...cause you will go blind...or in this case your mouse will!!!! (sorry i couldnt resist!)

goddamnit the mouse isn't dirty!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the computer will sometimes even make a beep noise just when the mouse freezes.

(you all aren't makeing this easy)

Now now lil fly....we are just making this hard because 3 out of 8 of us actually love ya!!! And this is our way of poking fun at you!! :p

Three possibilities:

1: There may be a problem with your USB drivers. Have you installed anything which might have "upgraded" or reinstalled your USB support? For Example, a friend's HP scanner software installed Win-95 USB drivers to his Win ME system, causing frequent system locks and erratic opeeration of all USB components.

2: The mouse cord might be bad -- frayed or broken wires where the wire enters the mouse are common when a mouse reaches about two years old. If the mouse cord isn't free to move along it's entire length, it might not take even two years to start to show the effects of wire fatigue.

3: Static discharge. Do you have a static mat/strip for your keyboard? You might consider getting one for your mouse/mouse pad. It wouldn't necessarily take enough staitic electricity for you to feel it to confuse your mouse driver.

thanks weird harold. it may be the usb drivers I've had problems with usb devi........ ummm nevermind that. I have a ps/2 adaptor on my mouse forgot that. lol, and i'm too lazy to erase what I said already.

I have my OLD mouse I could try see if anything happens (if I can find it) that mouse is ohhh 5-6 years old I really thing what it actualy is is my computer needs a reformat. I tryed to defrag the HD the other day 40 giger. 37 gigs ere fragmented, and 28 of those couldn't be restored.

WHAT?! I dont get a thanks?!?! :( and I was trying to help you afterall!

I changed from PS/2 to USB and I kept getting an error now and again saying that usb device not connected.

so I checked the wire... they were all tangled, untangled them and the mouse has yet to cause a problem and seems to be moveing smoother.

I thought a kinked wire only afected liquids not electrical signals too....
go fig, thanks Harold

If changing the position of the wire fixed the problem, it's only temporary.

What "unkinking" the wire did was push the frayed ends of a broken or breaking wire back together so it makes contact. It won't be very long before the broken wire inside the cord will separate again because of the same forces that frayed it in the first place.

Unless you're up to finding a replacement cord and disassembling and reassembling your mouse, you'd better dust off your credit card or check book -- you're buying a new mouse soon.

You will never have dirty balls again.

  :)

Try reading the thread first. It IS an optical mouse he's having trouble with and three other people suggested dirty mouse balls.
