half price connection charge as an introductory offer.

I'm tempted because of the fast (10x faster) upload times and the constant connection to the net.

Is anyone else using broadband?

Is there a catch?

Yeah. You will never want to go back to dial up again.

Seriously broadband is gret. faster surfing(more porn in less time)
Listen to online radio, watch video clips.

Thanks YG69...

that's better advertising than the IPS has sent out...

:D

*raises hand tentatively*

Um, I have a question. What's an IPS? Is that like UPS only without that sexy shorts?

Well that's fucked up bass ackwards. It's ISP, Internet service provider. Internet modifies service, so you know the service is an Internet service, and service modifies provider, so you know that the provider is providing a service, specifically and Internet one. Now, if it was an Internet Provider Service, that's just fucked up.

The catch is that it quickly becomes the only way you can do much on the web. When I last traveled, I had access to an old Mac with an old AOL account, but I couldn't even post anything here, as it simply took too long to read posts and respond. Dialup only works for checking mail when you're desperate or in Eastern Europe. But get a firewall if you get a cable modem or something comparable. And get it immediately - people will hack you at least 5 times a day. ZoneAlarm is worth the money.

For any kind of broadband you should always check the contention ratio (especially in UK). For home users the contention ratio is usually 50:1, which means that 50 users share the same broadband access. This can be problematic, although usually it isn't. For example, if you are being offered a speedy 500k access speed (as opposed to the usual 56k modem speed) but 50 other users sharing the line are all on at the same time, you each get just 10k each for that moment in time - a lot slower than your modem! The only other option is a dedicated leased line, but that is very expensive.

So check with your ISP what the contention ratio is and if they envisage this being a problem in your area. And if your going to opt for it, go for ADSL not ISDN.

Good advice!

But Zonealarm is actually free when it's for personal use

I think ppman is talking about ADSL; a pretty new service in England...no sharing and no clogging phone lines. I want it too but am too poor to afford it :(

Thanks folks...

once again the Lit expertise prevails...

I've sent individual pms where I had an additional question.

I'm speaking to them tomorrow so I'll be able to dazzle their sales team with my knowledge!

:D

KillerMuffin I always have trouble with that...I know it's ISP but my fingers go their own way and I end up typing IPS...

Is there some deep meaning hidden in my psyche somewhere that can explain it all?

:D

Hey!

1) p_p, your mailbox is full, so clear it out (including the SENT box) so people can write you back.

2) zone alarm is at http://www.zonelabs.com/

3) IPS is International Press Service, also called InterPress. It's a leftie news service based in Rome.

Good luck.
