My ignorance of Windows. Computer problems! Please help me.

Here's a bunch of shit.

I power up - wait for it to check itself out, go thru DOS and what ever - it settles down into that familiar blue box - the Welcome to Windows box - I usually/always choose "cancel" - and normally go to a custom background/custom icon arranged - main/start past - the one I'm most familiar with.

But sometime I mistakenly hit "okay" in that Welcome to Windows box. Which I did today. And it sent me to a screen with all my icons but not arranged how I now them to be - the background is also, plain Presario Blue. And, now I finally notice that the resolution is different between these two choices.

My familiar screen is "bigger print" the other "okay" choice is smaller. Higher resolution?

So why and why and double why????

Why the blue Welcome Windows Box with two choices at all? They both - boot you? Right? Why two different resolutions depending upon you choice?

Another thing. A couple of things.

Whenever I first post on Lit - my very first post after powering up and getting on via AOL - top to bottom, I type my, I type my password and pen some shit as I'm doing now. I hit submit and it always says, (lately, it didn't months ago) "you don't have permission - there allready is a Sparky Kronkite - have you forgotten your password?" Well, no the fuck I have not. So I hit the back arrow and in my password box is NOTHING even though I had put it in there. I re-type it and then it submits and I get a "thank you for posting."

Why is this? Why only in the past 6 months?

Another thing - because of this - sometimes, in order to protect my work from loss - I cut it from Lit and paste it to Word'97. Fine - it's saved - but, but, but - when I want to reverse the process???? It, Lit - won't let me. I can't cut from my Word'97 and paste it is Lit. Nope, no boxes, no nothing - the "paste" command in Edit just stays highlighted and nothing I do will let it paste.

Might all these things be related??????

I'm not one who can help, but I can tell you that if I choose "okay" or "cancel" I will get my same screen, same icons, arranged the same way.

Your computer is pissed off that you haven't done anything nice for it lately, like taking it for a walk.

My best guess. Sorry for the frustration.

Sparky, did you change e-mail addresses? If so, I think u need to validate the change (they send it to the new e-mail). This happened to me.

Now, let me read the thread about your windows issues more closely and see.....

I also just notice that, due to this Unregistered thread.....

that I can't "cut and paste" from one thread to another. I wanted to cut this info in this unregistered and re-post it in a Sparky thread. And I could not do.

Why?

I think your windows problem

Is that when you clicked ok it created a new user profile for you, thus the changes?

Try going to the control panel and removing the new profile with the "users" applet. Not sure which version u have, so it might be named differently.

Before you do any of that, have you rebooted and hit cancel as you always do?

Try copy.... then paste. U should be able to do it in both N4 and IE5.

You cant cut because its a web page.

It sounds as if you are using Win 98 and have two users defined, the Default user which you get by <Esc> and the other user you get by pressing <Enter>. If the icons are larger as well as the text, that sounds like a lower resolution screen setting in that user profile. You can check that thru the Display icon in the Control Panel. And with some video drivers you can do it from an icon in the System Tray (where the clock display appears in the task bar) or by right clicking on the desktop. The Settings tab should show you the resolution settings.

And at the point where you get the dialog box you note, the system is already booted up and running Windows. What you do from this dialog is access a user profile. What that means is that Win 98 allows a computer to be shared by multiple people and each person may have their unique Start Menu, Desktop, etc.

When you first hit the Lit BB opening page, does you name appear at the top right? If you have cookies enabled and select automatic logon (one of your user profile options on Lit), you should be signed in automatically but it seems to do that only if you go to the BB initial page http://www.literotica.com/forum/. If you have a bookmark directly to a thread, you bypass this screen and you are not logged in automatically it seems.

If you are logged in, when you go to the post screen, your username is automatically inserted as the post originator and the password is not queried. If your password is queried, then you are actually logging in when you post. And if you use the Preview and come back to the post edit window, you must reenter the password.

Why you get the "you don't have permission" message, I don't know unless perhaps you mistyped the password. It is case sensitive while the username is not.

I do copy and paste all the time between the Lit post editing screen and MS Word. In fact, I'm using that technique for this post. I use Netscape 6.0 browser and the only problem I have is when I copy from Word and paste into Netscape, I get some weird character translations. Most annoying is the MS Word apostrophe (') character is translated as a question mark into Netscape. I find I can avoid these errors by using the MS Word Save As feature and selecting the Save as type: as option Text Only(*.txt). Be sure NOT to select Text Only with Line Breaks(*.txt)

Then load this file into Notepad and copy/paste from Notepad into your browser. The new file should show up in you Documents list on the Start Menu. And beware, it won't show up in the Documents list until you have closed the document in Word, i. e., you are no longer editing it in Word.

I hope this is some help.

Try turning off "Smart Quotes" in the Autoformat menu. Word uses special codes for Smart Quotes, Em-dash, Ellipsis, etc. that don't translate to HTML format very well. If you turn off "autocorrect" in the template you use for composing posts, that should solve your strange character problem.

Once again, the experts here have helped me out.

Thanks - there was a dual user situation - no more. Things are better. Now working on the log-in and cut and paste problem. I'm certain this info will help me make it happen.

Thanks a again.

Sparky.

Thanks for the info.

However, I prefer to leave those settings as they are. I do more for which I prefer to retain for my own purposes that my copy/paste for Lit posts.

I have no idea what Sparky's level of familiarity with Word is so I offered him what I found as a fairly simple solution if he has the same or a similar problem.

My way, he doesn't have to find the Options... menu option, make changes for this and then restore them for regular stuff. And being lazy, that's too much effort for this old man to expend! :D

I have separate templates for when I need smart quoes on and off. That way I don't have to consult the help menu every time I want to change them. :) I just have to remember to use the File/Open menu instead of the "New File" button which opens with "normal.doc" as the template.

Thanks, WH,

that's something useful I didn't realize; that the Options... settings were stored in a template file.

You have to specifically request that they be saved, but yes, you can have different options saved in different templates.

HTML code is OFF

I want to use html codes to post in these forums but the status says "HTML code is OFF"
How do I turn it on?
Thanks for any help.
