Do you remember McCarthy? Probably not, but you remember the legend, you remember the story, you remember the witch hunt and depending upon your polity you remember it as a time of Inquisition or Truth thwarted.
Those of you whom are 'Historians' may disagree with me, and please do, we are operating in the shadows of absolute truth. Did McCarthy out some avowed enemies of the state? Probably. Did he target some harmless, mostly innocent, Liberal types of the far left? Probably.
This was a purge. The state, beginning with Wilson and and expanded greatly under FDR was beginning to become the baby Leviathan that it is today. As today, the rich, the powerful, the Liberal intellectuals and mass media leaders were opposed to an encroaching government aimed not so much at benevolence as dominance of the public weal for their own benevolence and so they stood up to it and paid the price; honest martyrs.
Today, the focus is not on Communism, but has become a focus upon sexual predators among the aforementioned groups. Yes, there are some true enemies of the people out there, but this has become an opportune time for those who mean to rule to purge itself of dissident elements across the political spectrum.
Again, please feel free to disagree; honest dialog is the only way forward.
