So I went hunting for the first time about a month ago. I'm 24 so I dunno if I'm late to the hunting biz or not. However, my first time I did see a big buck but the thing was it was super pissed. I was told that it was because of the "rut" which makes them go crazy.

Anyway, this deer ran past me about at a distance of about 5 feet and I didn't shoot. Has this happened to any other would be hunters?

Boring story I know, but there's too much sex on this board!

Personally I would have reached over and grabbed it by the rack and jumped on it's back, riding it down to the ground and twisting it's neck until broken. Then I would have bitten into it and drank it's blood then stood up and given a earth shaking war cry.

But that's just me.

Froze up, eh?

I take it you've shot shot anything, even smaller varmints? I felt guilty the first time I popped a squirrel with a pellet gun.

I know heard about this man from the same town as I which he was hunting and seen a deer at the bottom of his deer stand and instead of shooting it for whatever reason he dicided to jump on it and try to kill it with his hunting knife. Long story short he ended up stabbing himself in his own arm and till this day has scores on his face from the deer.

It's called buck fever and in one form or another it's happenned to every hunter. Twice I've pulled the trigger on big bucks without a round in the chamber.

I only use a bow but I mostly hunt trees. Walnuts. Maples. Got a big Oak once. The Oaks are really hard to clean. You need a sharp knife. Evergreens like to hang in packs and if you're lucky, one will break out for a clear shot. Hunting trees from trees is another way to go. My freezer is full of lumber. 2X4's. 1X3's. Even a 2X12, but they are only good on the grill. With all the deforestation it's getting really hard to find good tree hunting anymore.

You did the right move Christopher1983. If they are running fast, just watch and wait. Don't be an idiot and just "throw a shot at them". That's the way other hunters get shot and/or killed. Always make sure of your target and have a clean shot. One shot ,,, one kill.

Whitetails only run for a short distance, their speed is in burst not indurance. If something like that happens again, just stay still for a few minutes. then stalk the deer. Usually right over the next rise or a gully. Learn to still hunt. It might take you 1 hour to move 300 yards but you'll see deer and get a shot.

Read up on the subject and good luck. BE CAREFUL

I'd do the same thing, only in a loincloth.

The first time is always difficult. Hunting and sex are both messy when done correctly. Maybe just a touch of performance anxiety.

it's probably a good thing you didn't shoot. it sounds like you were too excited. odds are you would have probably just missed or worse, hit the animal but not have been able to bring it down.

This just about made me pee, I laughed so hard.

This is good advice. At five feet you would have been swinging too quickly. If you don't have a clean kill shot, don't fire. A wounded animal may run quite a distance and it will suffer badly. If you don't kill it cleanly it is your responsibility to track it and put it out of its misery. If you aren't prepared to do that you should not be hunting.

My prefered quarry is clay targets.

Good luck in future
