When I go to a website that is full of that fucking musical shit--it always locks my computer up--is there a way i can fix this so that i don't have to deal with the sounds?
(muting does not work--the computer still loads the sounds and gets locked up just the same)

What can I do?

What program do you have configured to play streaming audio from the net? If is NOT the windows Media player or Real Audio, then change it back to one of those. If it is one of those, change to the other.

You might also try checking the web for an upgrade to your streaming audio player.

How do I determine this?
I did have real player but I could not get it out of the lower right corner and it would "attempt to access the internet" all the time (according to my virus scanner) so I gave up and dumped it--it was a pain in the ass that wasted mucho of my time here. I have no idea what is used now.

What I really want is a place on my computer where I can click a little box that is desigened to block sound files from any website unless I am downloading it intentionally.
I have yet to find such an option. Does it exist?

If I am reading a webpage, I simply want to READ it--not listen to a bad version of "You Light Up My Life"!!!!!!!!
(What the hell was that doing on a BDSM club website anyway?!!??)

(WH--Thank you for helping to rescue me. I am always grateful for you being here. )

Not that I know of.

My mute button (via the speaker icon/volume control) in the system tray will shut all sounds off. It won't stop the music from downloading and playing; It just stops the sound from leaving the sound card.

********** may have the capability to control which commands on a web-page are executed, but I haven't a clue what use that capability might be because I don't know Java that well. I think it's doubtful.

In IE 5.5,

Tools-> Internet Options-> Advanced-> Multimedia->
Play Sounds.

Uncheck it.

If it's not there, let me know what browser and version you're using and I'll do some looking.

good find!

Does that setting also stop the sounds from downloading, or is it like a mute button just for HTML pages?

Thank you mucho! I appreciate the helpful attention from both you guys. I tried it--we will see if it stops. I don't encounter those musical websites much (seems to be mostly on personal webpages as opposed to pages with a real purpose).

If you know of one where I can try it out, please post a link here. Thanks.

Laurel's infamous Marbles game has sounds, and should show whether the option is working. Many of the MSN games have backgound sounds as well.

Sendafriend.com has e-cards with music that takes a while to download, as to many of the other e-card sites -- any of them would serve as a test as well.
