I've been reading the threads here on lit for quite sometime and I have paid particular attention to those threads that are music related.

While one's idea of "good" music may differ from one person to the next, there are certain elements in music that make a song appealing to the general public.

I don't want to write a thesis here, but I do want to convey my point, which is simply this:

Personal tastes aside, certain people have the natural ability to recognize/identify music that will appeal to the average person and also can recognize music on a number of other levels.

I have been in the business for over 30 years. I can identify a song and evalute it it based on all of the knowledge and experience that I have accumulated over the years.

The end result of that experience and knowledge is this...when I say to someone...here...listen to this...they like it.

Regardless of the genre they are listening to or the genre they prefer....a good song is a good song...good music is good music.

So, my point is that some people have the ability to recognize "good" music. Not what the individual considers good, but good in the definition that it will appeal to the masses.

your thoughts.

Eveyone I know who's in the music business (plays an instrument, is in a band or is an audio engineer) is extremely critical of what's out there. I guess they would be able to pinpoint what would be a hit but they don't always like it or consider it good.

music is art

Art is subjective. So how can there be good or bad music ? But music is also a business and in that sense some is more profitable(better).Mass appeal makes money.

Unfortunately, a lot of todays music is not art. It's manucactured from start to finish.

There are certain elements in music that make people feel good. Whether it be a certain beat, tone, melody. If you can contrive a song that combines these elements it is sure to be a "good" song.

I got lucky this past weekend and heard the most incredible band live in my little town in a little pub crawlin with people dancing and just diggin the scene-

a funked out hip hoppy jazzy quartet with 3 different mc's and such chops galore...

as a longtime player and listener, i revelled in their purity, unsigned unheard of, unheralded...unbeleivable

and so fucking good...

Yes, I think melody is # 1. Then beat., but usually melody and beat are concieved at the same time.
