It ain't free but ...
I recently bought a copy of Sound Forge 6.0 from Sonic Foundry to transcribe my LP's to CD. This program handles just about any audio file format you can name and at $60, it's a good buy.
If you can't find a freeware or shareware at http://www.tucows.com, this is one worth looking toward.
It's a very powerful audio editing tool and comes with a 268 page manual on CD in Acrobat reader (pdf) format.
