Christie finished handing groceries to her husband, Chase, who was packing them in the back of their 4Runner. They had opted to stop now, well away from the exorbitantly priced tourist areas and stock up before meeting a group of Chase's college friends to share a lake house. It turned out that the majority of the group had all gotten jobs in the Nashville region, where Christie had inherited her grandparents' farm and rambling farmhouse. Chase and Christie had moved in the previous spring, and were almost lost in the house designed for 10 children.
The vacation was part celebration, part reunion, part "get to know you" party. Christie remembered meeting Ben and Mark. Mark, she remembered, had been dating someone other than the woman to whom he was now married. Ben on the other hand, had used Chase as his best man for his wedding to Laura. Christie vaguely remembered that Ben was some kind of engineer, although she didn't recall what Laura did.
After finishing the packing, Christie got into the passenger seat and put her feet on the dash. Havinf seen injuries resulting from people doing just this in her career as a nurse, she knew she shouldn't, but couldn't help herself. As they drove, Chase occasionally brought up funny stories about the escapades of the group of friends during their college years. Meanwhile, Christie reached back to grab snacks and drinks.
At 5ft2, Christie had the misfortune of being built like a lacross defender. She weighed 130lbs, but was completely solid. She perceived herself as being barrel but flat chested, with too-thick of thighs that didn't hold a hint of cellulite at 29 years of age.
Finally, they pulled in to the drive for the lake house. Christie couldn't help but stand for a moment to appreciate it. Part of her wondered if they would all fit, even as another part of her brain registered that her perception was skewed due to living in the huge farm house for almost a year.
She noticed Chase circle the SUV to stand next to her. At 6ft2, he towered over her, his 185lbs neat and trim despite his long hours as an attorney. And despite his job, he was usually borderline reclusive. Until it came to his friends, that is. He was 31, and his dark hair was just beginning to be sprinkled with grey, his brown eyes often alight with underlying amusement. Usually at his far more outgoing wife. The couple began unpacking and moving their baggage into one of the rooms overlooking the parking area and fire pit.
