So I went to see Oppenheimer yesterday afternoon. Being quite familiar with the story of Oppenheimer, Los Alamos, The Manhatten Project, and Trinity, I thought I knew how the movie would play out.

The movie had flashes of his communist past, scientific dealings with prominent scientists, questioning of his past and sex life all dispersed through the movie. It went from past to present to future, and sometimes it was hard to figure out the timeframe because there was little context.

To be honest, I hadn't seen any trailers or prior information about the movie. But I was expecting a story about Trinity and some of his communist dealings. While I wasn't let down, the movie did drag on and on at one point, and I was left wishing for the end.

A plus for Florence Pugh fans...some nice sex scenes with her.

Why Oppenheimer now? Seems to go against the grain of Hollywood at this point. There was a movie (maybe two) in the 80’s about Trinity and the Manhattan Project, I wonder why this retread has come around?

Do you feel it was an expose or more on the fluff side?

I think it was more expose.

His communist dealings went far deeper than I knew. While I knew of his anti-nuke stance after Hiroshima, the lengths he went to were quite surprising.

Oh, and Florence Pugh.

I haven't seen it yet. It's likely I'll go this weekend.

I think the timing of a movie about Oppenheimer makes perfect sense. The issue of developing technology that is beyond our control is paramount right now.

I watched this in Imax and the opening sequences where stunning, great use of sound. Not really knowing the story it took me a while to work out it was dodging backwards and forwards in time. They really had the knives out for him, but it was good to see Robert Downey Jr's character (sorry, I'm terrible with names) get his comeuppance. Sorry if that's a plot spoiler but relevant to my post. I thought the stunning use of sound at the beginning got lost later on, even the test explosion didn't have the impact I was expecting.

So the detonation of the atom bomb disrupted linear time as we know it?

I keep hearing it was "great" from friends that have little historical knowledge and "okay" from fellow history nuts. The length is a little off putting. I may just wait for Netflix.
