OK, I haven't seen a movie preview in...a very long time but I will soon be back in the land of theaters and "seeing movie in theater" is in the top five of my "things to do ASAP" list. I have no idea what's on the theatrical horizon so I'm tapping you guys for suggestions. So what's coming out, or is already out and still will be in two weeks, that's really good or looks like it might be really good?

And as much as I enjoy talking head movies, I'd really prefer to see something that does the big screen justice. Action! Adventure! Things exploding!!!

Any suggestions?

Pretty much all of the good summer blockbusters are out of the theatres now, and many of my favorite movies of the summer were only in the theatre for a short while.

See if District 9 is still in theatres, its one of my favorite action-explosion movies of the summer. I think you would dig it.

Thanks Syd, I'll check it out. Lousy timing, re:action movies, I know. Oh well, my friends that I'll be staying with in Vancouver have one of those home theater rooms, so I can watch all the summer blockbusters on the semi-big screen, at least.

I'm not normally the person to ask this since i mostly see kid movies, but i really enjoyed the most recent harry potter. Um, marly and me was good. The new X-men was good. I can't think of anything new that i've seen, otherwise, that jumped out at me, though.

I can't name a movie that I've seen in the theatre this year. None of them has grabbed me hard enough to make me see it on the big screen. I've had some diffident interest in "Inglorious Basterds", but inertia got the better of me.

I could name five or six older movies that are worth watching, but that doesn't really answer the post.

And, on a completely unrelated bizarro world note, I watched Chuck Liddell dance ballroom tonight. Surreal does not begin to describe it.

Edit: I knew there was another movie I wanted to see, and that would be "Public Enemies"

I just saw District 9 last weekend, and I'd second Syd's recommendation. It's essentially an action film disguised as a sci-fi film, and although it employs a cast of mostly newcomers (at least to US eyes) and even some non-professionals it works well. Lots of action sequences, considerable tension, explotions galore. And the bad guys are very, very bad.

I liked District 9 too. I'm very much anticipating Zombieland as well!

Angels and Demons was very, very good, too. I'm sure it's out of theaters by now, since I saw it a couple of months ago in the military theater, which gets NOTHING on time. Still worth a watch. Lots of action, definitely explosions, and still smart.

Plus it has Ewan McGregor AND Tom Hanks. Seriously, how can you go wrong there?

Oh my god, the new X-Men movie was TERRIBLE. The plot was so convoluted and all over the place, a ton of characters get introduced and then mentioned maybe once after, and they rushed the release because the entire film got leaked on the internet which was maybe the stupidest move they could have made. The copy that was released online, half of the footage hadn't even gone through post yet, so not only was it a bad movie, but it looked bad. Instead of taking the time to make the theatrical release look great, they rushed the release and lied to movie-goers that the theatrical release would have extra scenes and look better when it didn't at all. Half of the movie was raw footage and you could almost even see the wires. Pathetic.

But I did really like the new Harry Potter film. I thought that it was the first film in the HP series that was good on its own, not just compared to the other films.

I thought Public Enemies was disappointing. It was pretty slow, and I didn't like the raw-footage visual style, which just kept me distracted half the time. Depp was great, of course, but they could have done a much better job.

I would say that is is a sci-fi film, not just disguised as one. It was sci-fi with lots of good, really good, action and explosions. And I don't remember the lead actors name, but yeah, he was really good. He's getting courted for lots of other big roles now.

I saw a test screening of Zombieland and I, for the most part, really enjoyed it. There is an excellent cameo and lots of good Zombie-killing. Not a perfect film, but fun.

Also, it won't be out anymore, but check out The Brothers Bloom when it comes out on DVD. A really great movie, and even a few explosions to boot.

i didn't see any wires and it didn't seem difficult to follow to me. As for the theatrical release and all that, i didn't even realize that it had hit movie theatres - i don't usually follow that stuff. i got it for my son (He's REALLY into super hero's), and we enjoyed it.

And (spoiler alert) I liked how they tied in the thing between sabretooth and wolverine together, and them being brothers and all that. Very cool.

But I did really like the new Harry Potter film. I thought that it was the first film in the HP series that was good on its own, not just compared to the other films.

Honestly, I watch Harry Potter cause the kids enjoy it. I liked this one cause I wasn't able to predict the ending. Of course, I wish I had - I would have prepared my son. He cried.

It wasn't difficult to follow, just so poorly put together. Of all the super hero movies in the past few years, IMO, it was one of the worst. The best? Iron Man. I'm really looking forward to the second one.

And speaking of Robert Downy Jr, his new film that's coming out soon, Sherlock Holmes, looks GREAT. And it has explosions.

I knew the ending because I've read the book, haha. I guess its good that you weren't able to predict the ending. A lot about those films are made assuming that you've read the books and know whats going on, because so much gets touched on so briefly or gets glossed over, and its up to the audience to fill in the blanks. But its great that despite that, the films still manage to be enjoyable for people who haven't read the books. Good for the film makers.

The same director did "City Heat", right? Or something like that. Val Kilmer, Pacino, I think. It was slow too. Hmm.

Also, DUH, I can't believe I didn't think of this before, Star Trek! Star Trek was amazing! It hasn't been out since like, June, but when that comes out on DVD you need to see it on as big a screen as you can find. Best big movie of the summer, hands down.

I won't argue with you there. Iron Man was really good.

Yeah, that's one i want to see.

I can't always predict exactly the ending, but the general idea (like I knew that valdimor would make an appearance in the one that digory died, but i didn't know that digory would die). But i totally didn't see (spoiler alert) that that one dude would die, and that the other would kill him. I figured that, at the last moment, they'd figure out what was going on and save him.

i haven't seen star trek, but k has and he said it was awesome. and k's a picky treky - it says a lot that he says it's awesome. he hasn't enjoyed a star trek movie in a long time.

If you're in any way entertained by B-movies or things like Plan Nine From Outer Space, I recommend GI Joe harder than I've recommended anything short of not getting kicked in the crotch. If you go into it determined to treat it seriously, like you would most anything else, you'll find it poor; if you remember the cartoon series as being funny but stupid and figure the movie will be the same, you'll laugh until you cry at how silly it all is.

I have seen most of the big Blockbusters this summer. Star Trek was great, Harry Potter was also, Transformers was good(plus hey it had Megan Fox in short shorts or jsut short or tight outfits how can you fail with that), Wolverine was ok. GI Joe I thought was better then what people where saying

Hey, as a piece of mindless entertainment it was great. As a film, something to be compared with Iron Man or the Green Lantern movie, it stunk like year-old haddock left behind a radiator.

Thanks everyone for the feedback! Some of the movies mentioned I have seen, since 90% of the DVDs we get here are pirated. But it would be nice to see Star Trek with sound and without the dark outlines of theater goers standing, stretching, and making trips to the washroom, in front of the action.

Love Sci Fi, so District 9 sounds fab! Will save GI Joe for home theater.

Feel free to toss out more suggestions, I'm jotting down notes.

There isn't a Green Lantern Movie yet

No, but it's a Green Lantern movie starring Ryan Reynolds. Uwe Boll himself couldn't make it suck.

Serious suggestions? If you're in any way interested in our football, The Damned United stars Michael Sheen and got a good review from my football-hating friend. If you liked Little Miss Sunshine, I'd also recommend Sunshine Cleaning, which got nearly no publicity here despite being really quite good. Very good, in fact. And, as mentioned, Iron Man 2 and Sherlock Holmes.

Uwe Boll could fuck up a free blow job. Never ever underestimate his ability to make something suck.
