Brianna had really been looking forward to this semester. She was finally 21 which meant no more fake IDs, no more white knuckle moments at the local bars and quite frankly no more guilty feelings. However, things had definitely gone south a month before when Tony's father had lost his job and he had been forced to drop out of school.
Brianna had felt a bit lost without Tony as they had been inseparable since high school. Everyone else in her suite was dating, and was rarely around. Technically, this should have been a good thing - not having a boyfriend to distract her from her studies, but she was a bit lonely even with all her suite-mates, when they were in that is.
Packing up her books and shoving them into her backpack, Brianna contemplated yet another dreary Friday night. If she was stuck studying on yet another Friday, she might as well do it in the comfort of her room and not in the Trenches, the nickname for the basement of the engineering school. She was just leaving her normal alcove when she bumped into Buzz, one of Tony's former suite-mates.
"Brianna... I haven't seen you in awhile," Buzz said, smiling in delight.
"Hi, Buzz. Yeah, I've been a bit... focused... on studying since Tony... left," she responded, trailing off a little at the end.
"Yeah, we were sorry to see him drop out... Maybe he'll be back next semester?"
"Unless his dad finds a job, I doubt he'll be able to re-enroll anytime soon."
"We... um... we... all... miss... you," he said shyly.
Brianna smiled, missing the gang as well. They had all been like big brothers, each with their own unique personality and 'charm'. She had often popped in and visited when she was waiting for Tony to come back from class and they never complained.
"Hey, we were talking about pizza, beer and movies tonight if you want to stop by," Buzz offered.
"Perhaps...," Brianna replied, not sure if she could with Tony not being there anymore. She gave him a little wave and walked quickly back to her room.
Sighing, Brianna told herself she was being silly. She had given herself a pep talk the entire time it took her to walk here and she simply stood staring at the door. She could hear the TV and guy voices, although she couldn't make out what was being said. Taking a deep breath, she knocked on the door and waited. She waited a few minutes and tried again.
Given the noise from the TV, Brianna figured whoever was there couldn't hear her, so she opened the door and walked in. First thing she noticed was that pretty much all the guys were in the room watching some movie. It took them a minute to notice who had walked in, which happened to be just about the same time Brianna finally figured out that the nurse on the TV screen wasn't just taking some patient's temperature...
