As you may have seen in in the news recently, a wonderful artist has just recently passed. Dan Fogelberg died on Sunday at the age of 56.
Ant mention of Dan invariably brings up his most well known song, 'Leader of the Band'. In fact I had this song running through my head all day today at work so when I got home I immediately downloaded it, sent it to the stereo and sat down to listen to it.
For those who may not know, that song was written by Dan as a tribute to his father who was a bandleader. His father died less than a year after the song was released.
Sitting there in a darkened room with the song on I was actually moved to tears by the images that it evoked in me. What power and skill can a man have to evoke such emotions in others whom have never even seen him, through something so simple as song lyrics?
When the song ended I asked myself, Could I ever write something with enough power to move another stranger to an emotional response? Does it take a special skill to be able to evoke emotions this strong or is it just hitting a chord with you subject?
In some way, this response has renewed my drive to write, just to see if I can create something powerful enough to evoke a response in somebody. I suppose inspiration comes in many forms.
So my question is this: Has anything ever moved you like this? What response did it evoke in you?
