Motorcycle Challenged - (help please)

Dont know if it would be plagerism or not but ......well.

Rent the movie Harley Davidson and The Marlboro Man sometime....good movie. Don Johnson....Mickey Rourke. Mickeys character is the consumate biker.

But at the end of the movie....Rourke is sitting outside the dusty parking lot of a rodeo where Johnson is riding.....two lane highway, no one on it and hes poised to pull out and get on but looks to his left and a dozen yards away is this pair of tight jeans with long hair and her thumb out hitchhiking.

He says....where ya headed....she says: No where special. He says....Comon. Ill take ya there. She gets on the bike and wraps her legs around his and they ride off.

Just a cool scene to maybe shake something loose.

I'm not sure it's going to be relevant to the story. He's going to meet a chick on the road who's out to "find herself" blah blah. She's in her 20's, intrigued by the nice looking guy on the bike. Likes that he's older, likes that he seems a bit on the dangerous side (hell he could be a teacher for all she knows or cares, she just wants to sew a wild oat with him.)

I'll assume he's been riding long. He knows how to handle his bike and looks sexy as hell doing it.

Well since you put the guy in his 40's and riding for a bit, let's assume that he has a good enough job that allows him to splurge on seriously expensive custom built chopper. Since I don't know that much about this subject I will leave you here, but in the meantime come up with a look that you think fits the character's personality and when someone with more experience in the field comes along ask them how plausable is something like that.

Aww yeah, definitely similar to what I'm looking for. Thanks for the reminder.

Thanks L&F, I appreciate your sane replies. :rose:

Around here, Wide Glides are popular with the Harley riders...of course, many can only afford 880's or sportsters...so they drool over the Wide's. myself, I'm working on building a custom...280 wide rear tire, semi chopped, not quite the long rake in front as a true chopper, and a nice 125 c.i. Patrick Racing or S&S engine. Lots of other details in the works, but I'm still on the frame as of yet.

As for aftermarket rides...there is a long list to choose from. Orange County, Vengance, Big Dog, Arlen Ness, Walz (German made aftermarket), and many others. Since I live out of the way so far, and I have limited time to visit all of them to find what I'd like to have, I just decided to build my own.

L.C. and The Heretic are the best ones to talk to I think...although I think there are a few others here that ride Harley's too.

I always enjoy reading Lost Cause and the Heretic talking about motorcycles. They're more morning posters, though.
Lost Cause is your man for Harleys and Indians. While I know about the bikes themselves to a degree, LC knows a lot more about the culture and the lingo as he has spent a lot more time with them than I have.

LC is a night person, but he works nights too, so he posts early in the morning after getting off from work. I am a morning/day person.

A much better scenario would be if he had a seriously restored Indian or Harley - this would show some taste. Everybody and their dogs that has a little bit of cash goes for a custom HD bike, but the serious American bike aficionado would lust after a nicely restored vintage bike which the RUB (Rich Urban Biker) wouldn't even recognize.

This gives the author of a story some leeway to have a woman (I assume there will be a woman in the story) also know a little about bikes in order to impress the biker.

Hmmm, that's a possiblity (having her know something about bikes.) I'll think on it. I mostly had in mind that she admired the bike, but didn't know much about it. (She's more interested in the rider.)

I do like your idea about a restored bike... it'd be a nice detail to include.

Here's the bike that s pretty close to what I'm building. My roject has turned in quite a lengthy one too. Oh well, maybe before I get too old to ride the damn thing I'll finish. heh.

So is it proper etiquette to say a bike is "pretty"?

That bike is way pretty. Nice. Thanks for the visual. :D I'll use it for reference.

Now I need a visual of a hot biker guy in his 40's...

Who said it had to be something as cliched as a custom Harley? Maybe he spent years of his own time working on it once he got home, maybe he finally finished that project started by his noe departed father. It all depends on the type of character the guy is.

If you are looking for a womans perspective.... I go to Sturgis every year and have missed very few since I was 17. It's changed so much. We are going this year. I rode when I was younger (started on a 50 Kaw when I was 5 and moved up to a Sportster when I was 22. I haven't driven a street bike in 10 years but still tool around every so often on dirt). Ask away.

Sam Elliot, Chris Christopherson, Russel Crow or George Clooney. Age them to fit.

Could you really get away? I stay at my Dads. He's a mean old drunk who tries to be a conservative Christian. The great part about it is he is a cripple and you can poke him with a stick if he gets outta line.

That's true - but I am just thinking of something truly unique - what I would have if I rode a Harley or an Indian. The thing of it is that everybody and their dogs has a nice custom Harley, whether they worked on it or not. You usually don't know if they did the work themselves or just bought it, or something in between.

A discriminating woman would go for someone who was just a little different, someone who had a vintage bike. While every 'custom' is somewhat unique - they all seem very much the same to me as they have beautiful chrome and paint and are works of art, but are not really bikes to me - just custom show pieces.

Now a vintage bike may or may not be unique - there may be a number of other people who have the same or similar bike (unless it is very rare) - but the people who own them usually are quite unique, usually do much of their own work, could care less about having something to attract bike groupies - but want something they can be proud of, that is restored to original, that another vintage collector would admire.

If it were me, it would be an Indian. This is what my father rode:

And this is what my grandfather rode:

Women call bikes 'pretty' or 'cute' all the time - even though some bikers wince when they do (the smart ones just smile and say 'thanks'). 'Beautiful' and 'nice' are okay. It would be out of character for most women to compliment the bike in the terms bikers do.

*Yawn* Wassup?

Oh no! Not another bad boy biker/modern day pirate love story!

What 'cha need L & F?

Hey, from a chick's point of view, that makes a hot story.

Especially if they fuck on the bike. ;)
