Hopefully they'll be swept at some point. Doesn't help much now though.

The site did a sweep. Then the troll / trolls did the same again. The site did a second sweep and so far no recurrence. But the the collateral damage is 11 of my stories that were 4.5 or better which are now 4.4x

I’m kinda over it. I’m back writing. I’ve written off ratings as meaning much. I do however think that the site could try some different approaches though.

I get all that. What I don’t get is multiple one bombs all landing within a couple of minutes with no discernible uptick in views.

That’s not a difference of opinion on the merit of a story. That’s abusing the system in order to abuse members. If four people hate my a story, that’s their prerogative. I won’t complain. But if one person gives me four or five 1s within a few minutes and then goes on to do the same throughout every story in my portfolio, that’s not criticism, it’s attempted bullying.

It’s that I wish was harder for trolls to do.

Yes, I noticed that pattern with someone I referred to as a turd in this swimming pool. It seemed that every time someone would rate my story with a 4 or 5, within minutes, I'd receive another 1. One story about two months ago posted and received so many 1's it stayed at 1.8 for most of the first day. Then I think the Admins got involved and stripped a dozen of them out, because the number of ratings dropped, and the score jumped by almost 1.0.

But I look at the silver lining, as I'm nailed on the cross; "Look on the brighter side of life!" [from "The Life of Brian."]

I have a dedicated follower, who, without me, would have no life at all! I and my story seemed to be his sole focus for two days of his life!!!

Try to think of it this way: If you react negatively to someone's words, you EMPOWER them with control over YOUR future. You have given them the power to make you react that way again with merely another word.

In this swinger story, "My Wife Wants a Hall Pass", I wanted to explore more dynamics of a swinger lifestyle. Also, some recent forum exchanges about wives not being considered the husband's property and her having the right to date others gave me more material to address.

I just got a comment, anonymous of course, saying “why do you even write?”

My reply, “because it annoys you”.

So fuck tha trolls, fuck them in their stupid asses (kinda NWA / Kevin Smith crossover there).

If I annoy low-life enough that they want to use sock puppets to vote my stories into oblivion, then I’m clearly messing with their two braincell heads. That’s a win.

Great response! There are many dicks on this site (and not just in the stories), but many beautiful people too...and I think they're actually in the majority, though it doesn't feel like it sometimes. I hope you get a nice comment that helps you forget that stupid one.

Purely out of curiosity, do you have any idea what upset this person so much? To go after you like that?

No. I don't know which person I might have pissed off with some forum comments. But there seem to be some forum readers who are easily triggered by a difference of opinion or when you express a different view of life.

My view is that everyone is different and unique. We each have our own experiences and made our own choices. And when someone describes a real-life experience, it shouldn't be dismissed as irrelevant with hate-spewing trolls attacking them. Surprisingly, there are many who decry intolerance in others, while BEING extremely intolerant themselves. They just see their own intolerance as justified. And I merely consider those types as ignorant.

Agreed. You can't consider yourself to be a tolerant person unless you tolerate those with whom you strenuously disagree.

The are quite a few active forum participants who can't handle someone arguing against their views without resorting to ad hominem, so it shouldn't be a shocker why some non-participants would react like that.

I couldn't agree more with what you said here, even though you've just described possibly even a third of active AH members.

I set myself a challenge. Don’t see anything wrong with that. Couldn’t care less about most comments (the truly vile get deleted).

But I think the site should work out a better way to police malicious ratings. Particularly obvious cluster bombs (either sock puppets or hopping to a new IP to rate anonymously) where the view number hardly moves. No I don’t know the answer, then I don’t run a web-site.

Personally, I’d make each rating tagged to a registered user, like favorites. A tiny fraction of readers rate, so I don’t see how that would dent traffic

The rating is intended to point people to worthwhile content. Malicious multiple 1 bombs corrupt that intent. It hurts readers by robbing them of an (admittedly flawed) indicator.

My latest story went public last night in LW, and it's currently at 2.8 with 263 votes. I now need only about 890 fives to get to that coveted Red-H!!!

On the bright side, it has over 15,000 views, and the first day isn't yet done!
