More proof that the people who say "Prosperity is right around the corner" are either morons or lying scumbags (and most of them aren't morons) is provided by a piece on CNN Money, hardly an anti-capitalist site. A new job survey by Manpower, Inc. shows there's no recovery in the job market, and none in sight even. 1.6 million jobs have disappeared in the last two years, "eliminated entirely." I suppose all the people who held those jobs are supposed to just wander off somewhere and die. Most troubling is the huge number of long-term jobless. One of five of those out of work-- a staggering 1.7 million-- have been unemployed more than six months. Boy, I sure love how capitalism creates prosperity for everyone!

The word from the experts is "Tighten your belt." Of course, a lot of people have already tightened their belts so many times, there's not much left. The bottom line, from John Challenger, CEO of Challenger, Gray, & Christmas (an "outplacement" firm), is: "Don't think the turn is right around the corner."

For guaranteed full employment at a living wage!

Employers slowing down on hiring

Thanks, but this isn't about me. I'm doing OK myself, even though I'm unemployed, but a lot of people are really hurting.

Write them a check, Red, Show them that you "care":D

Makes me glad that I still get paychecks.

It ain't much, but it pays the rent, and I'm not freezing to death right now.

"You're lucky you have a job"

The huge number of unemployed affects those with jobs too. Employers can easily terrorize them with the threat of firing, knowing they'll have a hard time finding another job.

Oh, I know. I'm not oblivious to reality.

That I haven't been fired yet is some consolation though. They could easily find someone who would work for less, although how much they would save in the end might not be worth the headache of re-training around an already inexperienced staff.

But yeah, the market today is a swift kick in the butt from the late ninties.

Redwave,

A lot of times jobs are eliminated but new jobs are being created too. For example, when horses and buggies were the norm of transportation, there were a lot of jobs in that industry. But then the car was invented so, those jobs ceased to exsist? Does that mean that all those people were jobless? No, not at all. In fact, Im willing to bet that a lot of them found jobs in the booming auto industry.

You should check out Economics in One Lesson by Henry Hazlett. Its a good book.

There's substantially more proof that recovery will come soon than there is proof that it will all collapse soon.
