I was going to say something clever here, but I don't want to give any secrets away.

I think you're correct about death being our current "monster."

Everything in society these days is all about avoiding death, or any contact with it. Used to, when someone in your family died, you washed and prepared the body for burial, and then the person was laid out in their home for visitation by friends and relatives.

We've distanced ourselves so much from it now that we pay others to do that for us, lest we 'contaminate' ourselves.

Hmmmmm, maybe this is why I am looked upon as being someone to be feared by so many people, especially my co-workers. I am the only person on my floor who does not fear death. I am able to clean and work with the dead, I am often called on by my co-workers to deal with the bodies of their patients who have died.

Oh don't get me wrong. I am not callouse about it. I treat the bodies of the dead with reverence. I treat the families with respect. I have been known on more than one occasion to allow the families or certain members of the families to help me attend to their loved one. The first thing I do however is to ask the family if they have any religeous preferences or needs for the handling of their deceased. You would be amazed at some of the requests I have received. (For some of them I have asked for and received written instructions, which are notarised and witnessed before being carried out.)

When I was a tiny girl my elder sister told me there was a monster living in the toilet. For a long time I was afraid to sit on the camode for fear of being bitten on the ass

Strange but true.

Where do Barney, The Care Bears, and The Telletubbies fit in here, to name but a few. They all scare the shit out of me.

Not to mention Courtney Love and Anna Nicole Smith.

I'm just saying.
Barney, Telletubbies, Care Bears?

Oh these are the Monsters created by organised religion. (They must be, look at how the Fundies are reacting to them. Reverse Psych anyone?)

As for Courtney Love and Anna? Damned if I know where they come from? Ted Kennedy's Imagination?

well i am still scared, actually. but not of being bitten, rather, of that it pulls me down into the toilet. i always look through between my legs into the toilet while i pee. just to make sure i see no strange movement there.

Hmmmmm.

I have seen a couple of movies where this fear is more than just described.

I have always thought it a waste of imagination.

A monster comes up between some lovelies legs and drags her into the commode to dismember her,

I can think of much more enjoyable although perverse situations.

Humans ARE the monsters.

They scare the shit out of me.

Just wait... my next Playlist just was submitted. *nodnod* It's not too graphic on first look, but the undertow is a bitch.

There's only one dangerous animal. But most of the time you have to act as if he's a sweet and loving as a cobra. - Robert A. Heinlein.

Back to the first topic, what do you think is the Taboo when all of our current *monsters* are simply sick & twisted humans? Look at the current slew of horror movies...Saw, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Wolf Creek, House Of 1,000 corpses & The Devil's Rejects, Hostel, etc...there are no *monsters*, but just non-supernatural, everyday humans.

I think that the taboo is our species propensity for violence. We either ignore it, or wallow in it.

They're all the devilspawn, as well as Morgan Fairchild. She's actually 392 years old.
