Mommy, Daddy... can we move to Arkansas

"We need a special session to fix this," state Senator Sue Madison said.

Ya think?

I actually read about this and that night had a weird dream. A society was created where women married at like 10, and were basically sold to the men. The quirk was that they weren't allowed to have sex until they were 18. So they still had their "childhood" but they also had quite an 18th birthday party. There were even thoughts of using age-progression to predict what the child would look like as an adult, to aid in the "purchase".

The bill reads: "In order for a person who is younger than eighteen (18) years of age and who is not pregnant to obtain a marriage license, the person must provide the county clerk with evidence of parental consent to the marriage."

It is my understanding that a marriage license in NOT issued to a person, but to a couple. However, the way the law reads, an under-18-years-of-age male seeking a marriage license would always need parental consent. That said, what is the pre-18-year-old male to do about the father of the possible bride, you know, the guy standing there with the shotgun. TIA!

I'm having visions of parents "marrying" their toddlers to each other as they did way back in the day between royals and such

I don't think that would work. It sounds like the toddler would have to apply for the license and not the parents. Also since it would be a legally binding contract I would think the judge (or whoever performs the ceremony) would require that both parties are capable of giving informed consent, something I don't think children can legally do until above a certain age (for some reason 7 comes to mind).
