When we were all at Cape Cod a couple of years ago, and then in DC with Imp, it was so very hard for me to call everyone by their "real" names. Everyone was still Mat, Min, Lucky, Vella & Imp...and I was still Cloudy.

Funny, the names we learn first are those we stay with.

Only the few that I've spent considerable time with off the forum are starting to register with me by their given names ... sometimes.

I'm usually called Dick (and I've heard ALL the jokes) - a good old-fashioned English name e.g. Tom, Dick and Harry; Dick Whittington, Lord Mayor of London and yes he did exist.

I've been called Dick since 1957 when I joined a Scout troop that already had a Richard, a Rick and a Ricky. Only the older members of my family call me Richard and I'm so unused to it I usually don't react.

Middle name actually.

Never, never ever, call a child by its middle name. Every trip to the doctor, every year in school, every official document, every time someone asks their "first" name a small problem is created.

As a child, I dreaded being asked my name because I knew it would cause a hassle. Either I gave my called name and had to go through the hassle of explaining why it wasn't listed as my "first" name or I gave my first name and had to explain why I sometimes didn't respond to it and why people who knew me called me another name.

I still get pissed at the doctor's office.
