Moderation on comments.

I agree with Randi and have to say that the whole comment section has totally lost its appeal, as any kind of dialogue is impossible now. If the occasional spam back then was the true reason for introducing the moderation, it looks like a huge and quite destructive overreaction to a very small problem.
It wasn't a small problem at the time - as I recall it, the site almost ground to a halt, because the spam was widespread and frequent for a month or so (maybe longer).

The effect now, I agree, isn't at all good, but back when it happened, I got the sense the site did what it could. It would certainly be nice if the site could get a more interactive comments system in place.

I'm a member of the comment moderation team on a high traffic site. Only registered members can comment. There's a pre-mod system which traps dubious comments. The system quarantines known spam sources, IP addresses of banned members, etc.

Comments by registered members are posted in real time, unless trapped by the pre-mod system.

Members can report comments and these reports are sent to the moderation team and admins.

Maybe voluntary moderarators would take some of the load off the Lit team?

To the best of our knowledge though, the comment "moderation" isn't content focussed, it's spam removal.

There's already a reporting function, which would appear to address scurrilous content, but that depends on readers reporting the content - and there's often a push-back from people saying, not my job, that's censorship etc etc. On the other hand, folk do report junk, so there's a balance, I guess.

If writers don't want anon comments, they can already block them. And writers can self-moderate, delete any comment at any time. I wonder though, how many writers actually know that?

The issue is the time taken to run the spam control batches - but none of us know the size of the problem. It needs to be a lot faster, definitely.

There is now a new issue of comments on stories not appearing on the stories for two hours or more after we have been notified in our control panels that we have new comments.

That’s a feature, not a bug. It’s nice to catch a new comment by a lunatic and delete it before it ever goes public.

Oh come on...who doesnt sit there and see a 1/2/3 bomb and then have the pleasure of waiting 8 hours for the complaint.
As well as the 5 star, and waiting for the praise?

That's not what it does, though. Plenty of lunacy still gets posted. It's always been the writer's prerogative whether to keep that or remove it.

The author can catch the wacko comment and delete it before the public can see it.

Quite so. And that in turn makes me wonder about the motivation of some commenters. The crude, hate-filled things sent to perfect strangers… What do they think they are achieving?
Glory of some sort? There are some people who think keeping junk comments is a form of heroism, so it's the flip side of the same coin, I guess.

I'm still a newbie around here.
I was never part of the site when there was (Live commenting)
It would be nice to be able to post a reply to a comment in real time...
I allow anon comments, my only opportunity would be to post a reply in the comments section.... But pointless 24 hours later, as they have probably moved on, and if it was a negative comment won't return...
Some body above mentioned capturing and deleting comments before they post???
I would like to know how you achieve that. Even using my works page, the comments are inaccessible until they post... So I don't understand how that could be achieved?
Randi, made several good points, which I support.
Literotica is a great site and I have enjoyed it immensely over the last couple of years.
I thank the owners, for their hard work, but I do believe there the reinstatement of live commenting would increase enjoyment for writers... It would also give them a lirrle more control....

If there was notification when a comment was replied to, or if your username was @'d, it could drive up engagement, and make replying to comments worthwhile.
Whenever a comment is posted to one of your stories, whether original or a response, you are notified. It registers to your "home" list.
