Moderately Entertaining American Accents

england has tons of accents too ... london itself has about 5 different accents :) ... also manchester liverpool yorkshire birmingham (aka brummy) :) ... my fav though is cornish use to spend my summers down in cornwall and its such a funny strange accent

The worst "real" American accent I've ever heard belongs to a guy on TV over here called Loyd Grossman, every time I here him I wanna stuff a rag in his mouth, it's not just his accent though he's a snobish self inflated tit.

I think Southern accents can be very sexy. I have the exact opposite of a Southern accent... *lol*

What's so cool about Southern accents is how many different ones there are. New Orleans, Savannah, and Charleston (and points in between) have a similar accent (hoose instead of house). Southwest GA and LA (Lower Alabama) sound like TX to me. Some of the barrier islands off the coast of the Carolinas and GA are inhabited by black people who are referred to as Geechees or Gullah. They were somewhat isolated and kept their native African culture and language alive. Pat Conroy wrote a book about being a teacher one of the islands that became the movie Conrack..

Two of my favorite to imitate:

"Chicago" - quite recognizable, and has its own special catchphrases that are fun.

"Wisconsin" - somewhat similar to the accent in "Fargo," but really recognizable as its own. There are also fun catchphrases from there.

Having moved all around the midwest, I now have an odd amalgam of accents, people can't quite put their finger on - some words I say with a Wisconsin accent (though I never lived there!), many with a hint of Chicago, and others with a more Iowa/Nebraska flavor. Odd really.

I live around Pittsburgh, they have accents there. They even have thier own language! (Seriously, we have a "Pittsburgher" dictionary at the bookstore I work at!)

I adore a good Gullah accent.

Also, the deep south Georgia accents. It's almost like a drawl on steroids. No matter what those people say, it comes out sounding sweet.

For myself, if I had to pick one American accent, it would have to be New York. It's so...different than mine. Perhaps it's the abuse I like? :)

Ooooweh, but why not? Afraid you'll get mad and hurt yourself on the "cawfee" table again?

i have to agree with you about the accents from Georgia.
when we went a few months ago to visit a friend of ours in Georgia, we died listening to them talk. it was so different.
the sayings, the accent, it was just tremendous.
it took a bit of getting used to, but we made out just fine.

i especially loved the food and the southern hospitality. i would love to go back again!

Clarification: they sound like Southeast Texans. Which differ from West Texans. Which differ from CenTexers, San Antons, Houstonians, and Dallasites.
