Born Again Avocado Aficionada

When I was a kid, for some reason we had TONS of avocado in the house and it was always going bad. My mom would make it into what she called "ice drop." This meant mashing the avocado, mixing with milk and sugar, and freezing in the ice cube trays. Ugh! I detested it. It was punishment!

So later in life, as I raised my own family, I avoided avocados and felt doubly validated cuz they were so expensive anyway.

Then my daughter found out about avocado on her own and she berated me for depriving her of this fruit. We bought a couple and made them into sandwiches (avocado and smoked salmon on thin slices of toasted wholemeal = bliss).

Mmmmm! Avocado is so sexy! I think avocado is the one food that I can eat slowly, with my eyes closed, making moaning noises as it melts in my mouth, rich, creamy and thick.

To me, around here, there's nothing better than a dark greek Haas avocado. mmmm (those giant light green avocadoes are disgusting)

I made a salad tonight with romaine lettuce, a whole avocado, tomato, shredded pepperjack cheese and sliced pepperoni. mmmmmm good

One of my favorite ways to eat avocado:

A salad of romaine lettuce (spinach is good too) with tons of baby shrimp and avocado. Cover liberally with lemon juice and sprinkle with crushed red pepper. Mmmmm.

I agree....the Haas avocados are wonderful! The big light green things ARE disgusting! JMHO.

I can think of one other food that I eat that way: the Ghiridelli (sp?) chocolate covered cheesecake that Olive Garden used to sell. I've embarrassed friends and my hubby by the way I'd eat that luscious dessert! LOL! Now that they don't sell it, I have no need to go to Olive Garden anymore.

Where I live we just roll out of bed and pick them up off of the ground. I eat avocado with EVERYTHING. Avocado and fresh salsa......every day.

I am alergic to them. If I eat them, they burn my throat on the way down, and then come back up about 20 min. later. I also get hives that last 24-48 hours after that.

A sandwich I love has avocado, meunster cheese, tomato, watercress and romaine lettuce on whole wheat sprinkled with salt.

I live in an area that has a Mediteranean climate and wonderful soil for growing just about anything. Our strawberry season lasts something like 10 months. Most of my relatives have an avocado tree in their backyard. I grew up on them.

1 large, ripe, Haas avocado
1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
1 tablespoon chopped scallions
1/2 teaspoon finely minced jalapeno pepper
Salt to taste
