I went and saw this a few weeks ago when it opened at the El Capitan in Hollywood, and I was completely mesmerized. It was easily the most engrossing animated film I have ever seen, and one of the most beautiful films in any medium, period. I am by NO means an anime freak, but I have enjoyed Miyazaki's work in the past, especially his Princess Mononoke. Spirited Away is a simpler film than Princess, though, and the plot is more surreal and dreamlike, a perfect vehicle for the incredible visuals that fill virtually every frame. This film gets my highest possible recommendation, and I definitely recommend that you catch it on the big screen to get the full impact. It shattered every box office record during its run in Japan, raking in well over $230 million, but I have no idea how long it will run in the US, as anime has never done big business on the big screen here. In short: go see it SOON. You will NOT be disappointed.

Has anyone else seen this masterpiece? Anyone planning on seeing it?

I'm dying to see it. I have a six disc Miyizaki DVD set that has twelve of his films, I bought it in Hong Kong and it's the pride and joy of my dvd collection!

Although I'd rather watch a subbed version of the movie than a dubbed version....which did you see?

I watched a subtitled version, but I've read in several places that they did a VERY good job with the dub this time (much better than Princess Mononoke). They are showing both subbed and dubbed versions at the El Capitan, at different times (I believe the 7:00 showings are always subtitled, but I could be wrong). They also used digital projection, which was flawless.

I am going to go see the dubbed version in the next few days. Normally I prefer subtitles, but it will be interesting to compare the experiences.

Have you watched Naushika? His finest work from the 80's? Anime version was simplifyed for the younger audiences, but Manga(i.e. comic book) version was much deep, dealing from WMD to Environmental Issues.

If you can get hold of the grown up version, I recommend it.

My favourite Miyazaki work is Laputa....I grew up on the anime. I still watch it every couple of months since i love it so much

I'm going to see it this weekend. We get a choice of versions in my city so I'm definately going to see the subtitled version.

The subtitled version was fantastic, and it even provided a few audience chuckles. When the title screen came up, the title was displayed in English, yet the subtitlers still felt the need to translate it.

Er, I guess you had to be there...

mmmmm i watched the trailers on link turtle gave me......i can't wait to go see it.....omg the music is spectacular.....click the link if you haven't.....look like an animated masterpiece for sure! :)

What link? where's the link=? Give me the link!

I love his stuff too, at first it was just something for the kids, My Neighbor Totoro, but it was obvious that there was far more artistry in his little pinky than in the whole McMouse Empire (at least today). Princes Mononoke is the only one I've seen in the theatre, but it was dubbed. I doubt either version will get to Loo-a-vul, but I'll keep my eyes open. Is Disney the distributor? There might be a chance. How long till it's out on DVD?

It is indeed being distributed by Disney, and it looks like it will be getting a fairly wide release. No idea when it's coming out on DVD, but I will definitely snap it up when it does.

Saw it earlier tonight. Excellent.

I have to say I enjoyed it more than Princess Mononoke but that might be because I saw the subtitled version. I saw Princess Mononoke dubbed which tends to ruin a picture for me (especially when you can recognize the voices of A-List actors; kind of takes you out of the moment).

I've been looking for Princess Mononoke on DVD so I can catch the real version. I rented Akira on DVD which has the original Japanese language track and it's amazing how superior it is to the cheesy American dubbed version.

But I'll end my anti-dubbing rant and talk about the movie. Spirited Away is definately one of the best films I've seen this year. Certainly a darker Alice in Wonderland type fable. Almost Clive Barker-esque in it's visuals. Highly recommended. Don't let it pass you by.

I'm studying anime at the moment for a uni subject. I'm guessing Spirited Away won't make it down under quite yet. I'm researching females and how they are portrayed in anime etc.
Can anyone suggest a few titles i could check out or perhaps a website or two that may help me out?
Cheers!

PS Any anime fans in Syd should check out the upcoming expo at dendy this month :)

The females in Miyazaki's work are treated a bit better than usual. As far as films to recommend, I can only think of the more mainstream ones like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Wicked City, etc.

If you're looking for something more dramatic and less Sci-Fi flavored, check out Perfect Blue which is a really good psychological thriller.

it still hasn't come here.....i checked the newspaper this weekend........dangit....must just be going to major cities first....i can't wait to take the lil miracle.....:)

SPIRITED AWAY DVD (Region 2, french release)

If You can't wait for an US release of Spirited Away and have a multiregion DVD player (that can read DVDs from other regions than 1) then You can buy this french edition (with english Dolby Digital 5.1 audio). Of course if You live in Europe you can also buy it (usually european DVD players are Region 2).

I just got an e-mail from Amazon this morning. They finally have a release date for the DVD: April 15th. I'm pre-ordering my copy now!

If you didn't get the opportunity to see this beautiful film on the big screen, I urge you to at least rent a copy when it is released. It is an absolute work of art.
