We don’t need no stinking pictures man

A fairy tale

Hanley, the Advertising Manager called Lisa, the Customer Service manager and said, “We’re getting complaints from users about their posted pictures disappearing from the bulleting board. Can you look into this and get back to me. This is really important because we sell advertising on the number of hits we get and that is dropping off daily. That means less revenue and you know how that ball runs down hill.”

Lisa, the Customer Service Manager called Bob the Information Technology Manager and said, “We’re getting complaints from users about their posted pictures disappearing from the bulleting board. Can you look into this and get back to me. Advertising is getting pretty upset about this because it lowers the number of hits.”

“Are you sure the users aren’t deleting the pictures themselves?”

“Yeah, this is real. Too many people complaining.”

“Okay, I’ll get back to you.”

Bob, the IT Manager calls Derrick, the Systems Supervisor, otherwise known as Head Geek. “Derrick, Customer Service is getting complaints about user’s pictures disappearing from the bulletin board. Can you look into this and get back to me?”

“You sure it’s not user’s deleting their own pictures? That happens a lot?

“Doesn’t sound like it in this case. It’s too random and wide spread.”

“Okay, I’ll talk to hardware.”

Derrick calls the Hardware Lead. “Jevon, We’re getting complaints from users about their posted pictures disappearing.”

“Are you sure they aren’t deleting the pictures themselves? We go through this shit every few months and it always ends up being a user problem.”

“Customer service says there are two many disappearing for it to be random.”

Jevon sighs. “Let me check with the server guy and see if we’ve had any hardware problems.”

Jevon calls the server guy. “We’re getting complaints from users about their posted pictures disappearing.”

“Yeah, probably user’s deleting the pictures again.”

“Customer service says there are too many are disappearing. Have we had any server problems lately?”

“Well, yeah kind of. A real minor thing happened the other day. You know our servers are clustered two to a cluster so that if one fails, the other picks up the load. One of the clustered database servers went into an endless loop and failed over the other day, but that shouldn’t have caused any problems. The other server picked up the slack just like it should. But, I gotta tell ya man, these servers are getting overloaded. I put four new servers in the last budget and it got whacked.”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. Could that server failover be the reason for lost pictures?”

“I doubt it, probably user error, deleting their own pictures. If there is a system problem, it’s not hardware related. You might talk to the web server chick. That web software is some flaky shit. Call Amber and tell her that she needs to do her voodoo dance and sprinkle some fairy dust on those web servers.”

“Hello Amber? This is Derrick, the Systems Supervisor. Customer service is getting complaints that pictures are disappearing off the bulletin board randomly.”

“Oh Derrick, like how many times have I heard this one? Probably the users deleting their own pictures again.”

“It seems too wide spread for that. Have the web servers had any problems lately? Could the pointers to the pictures get screwed up?”

“Like, you know, anything’s possible, but that sounds like more of a hardware problem. Have you called Jevon?”

“Yeah, just talked to him. He says nothing’s going on over there.”

“Well, we had a virus a while back but we downloaded a patch and that fixed it. We do need some more web servers to keep up with customer growth but I heard they got knocked out of the last budget. I would check with database services if I were you.”

“Hi Amy? This is Derrick, Systems Supervisor. Customer service says pictures are disappearing randomly. Have you guys had any problems lately?”

“Well yeah! One of the stupid hardware guys was screwing around or something and caused a server to failover. That hosed the database index, and then that took a while to rebuild but everything should be back to normal by now. That reminds me, we really need to purchase that new version of the database software. It got knocked out of the budget last year but we’re going to have more problems as we continue to grow in size. If pictures are disappearing and it’s not the users, try the file server group. The web servers store textual data on our boxes and some pictures but most are stored on the file servers.”

“Thanks. I’ll call Jorge.”

“Hey Jorge, this is Derrick, Systems Supervisor. Customer service says pictures are disappearing randomly. Have you guys had any problems lately?”

“Well yeah, the web servers picked up a virus that caused one of their servers to hang and that then caused a database server to start thrashing and the hardware guys had to manually fail it over. That lost all of the pointers to the pictures. We’ve still got all the pictures but some of the pointers are hosed.”

“Well can you restore from tape?”

“Not really. If we do that, then we wipe out everything posted since the problem occurred. Remember when I asked for the real-time back up system and it got whacked out of the budget? This is the kind of stuff that would have prevented. We could have restored right on line and no one would have noticed.”

“Okay, Jorge. Thanks.”

“Bob, Derrick here. I checked with all of the systems people and I don’t think it’s a technical problem. Are the censors removing pictures by any chance?”

“Thanks for checking Derrick. I hadn’t though of that but it’s a good question. I’ll get back to Customer Service.”

“Lisa, this is Bob. We’re pretty sure the censors are deleting pictures that they think might be offensive.”

“Bob, that can’t be! I am the censor and I sure don’t have time to look through every picture and decide if it is going to offend someone.”

“Oh, well okay. I’d blame it either on the President or sun spots.”

“Thanks Bob, you’re always so helpful.”

“Hey, that’s what I get the big bucks for.”

“Hanley, its Lisa. I wanted to talk to you in person but I’ll leave this on your voice mail. We’ve done a thorough system audit and we think the picture disappearing is some kind of censorship issue beyond our control, maybe related to the Patriot Act. I’m leaving now, so have a good holiday.”

question?

I just uploaded some photos but when i visit the site i don't see them. one didnt even show me in the nude. is this because of the new rules? also i had some santa photos that i can no longer see. what happened to them? not all of them violated those rules. just wondering if that could be explained.

*laughs and shakes head*

try reading through this thread
I think you'll find your answer (albeit, probably not a set in stone answer...but a good enough of one)

My opinion is that this law is not very enforceable......too much room for interpretation of "lascivious" and such.

Take a look at the history of First Amendment/Obscenity law. The terms "lascivious" and "obscene" have never been solidly defined. And this is a good thing. Had they been solidly defined, we'd be legally working with an 18th century definition of both terms (or wasting millions of taxpayer dollars and thousands of hours redefining them every few years). The words are intentionally left vague so as to allow for changes in culture/society over the lifetime of the law.

I had a picture removed from my thread that didn't show any genitals or any indications whatsoever of touching said gentials.
Or any erogenous zones, unless my nipples are prohibited.

To remove such pictures is ridiculous and just wrong.

I am attaching said picture to illustrate my point.

It's bullocks

There is a bug on here as well

Those of us that have been here for a few years know that Lit has had probs in the past with pix either disappearing or getting switched to other threads.

It's not just the rules thing, because there are FAR too many pix that meet the regulations and they are being removed as well

Also, normally when a pic is removed by a mod, they give a reason for doing so.

Now, I know damn well the two owners of this site do not actually do the removing of images on here. It is the mods. And if the mods are saying they're not doing it, then it's pretty obvious that there is another bug on Lit.

This is something that really needs to be looked into in more depth. I know it's not just the "rules" thing that is going on here. And as I said in my thread, if it is a case of mods/owners removing pix because of the rules, then I'm done with Lit. Because it's BS to remove pix that are within regulations of the rules, AND THEN not tell the person why the pix were removed.

There is another site that I go to that has to follow the same rules, and on there, it is ok to show full nude shots. It is ok to show the vagina as long as it is not being spread, played with, or penetrated in any way. It is ok to be completely nude for both the female and males (in the male case, no hard cocks, masterbation or penetration of any kind)

I do hope the problem is resolved soon

I have to say that I agree with Ember and I think there is far more to this than mods simply removing pics. I have had problems with some of mine vanishing that are well within the guidelines and I know I am not alone. I have only ever posted two pics that reveal anything of my pussy, they have all been tits and ass (with nothing exposed there either) yet I have had to repost about a dozen.

As some of you may know there is a little Lit enclave in the Leicester area and I was talking to Mark197205 earlier today. Several of his pics have vanished recently and at least one shows absolutely nothing at all. Nada, zip, nowt, sweet FA can been see in his baubles pic yet he said it has been removed twice over as many days. He has now posted it from an image hosting site so would the mods care to go and have a look and see if they can see even a centimeter of genitalia 'cos I am buggered if I can!!! (I shall pm a link to this post to the mods and see what happens - I shall not hold my breath!!!)

I think it has been mentioned in this thread that there appears to be some sort of pattern to the missing pics in terms of their original posting dates. I know some of mine from the end of July went along with some from November. I am going to try and double check and post precise dates and maybe it would be useful if other posters who have lost pics could see if their's are from the same dates.

Oh and by the way, Laurel has NEVER replied to my pm's on this subject so thanks to Nigel for starting this thread.

There have been NO CHANGES over the past

few years in US law or US court decisions that would otherwise impact what is posted on this site. The decision not to permit posting of certain photos has to be a decision by the site owner. Blaming the censorship that is occurring here on US law, US court decisons, the right wing, religious zealots, Muslims, Catholics, Republicans, Conservatives, or Bush is simply not correct.

I'm sorry but you are wrong. The Justice department issued new regulations defining what was covered by rule 2257 (the regulation covering what is considered porngraphic, what record keeping will be required of those who do produce such materials and what would be prosecuted).

Maybe you should look up all the disscussion here and on the web about the new regulations.

And Bush and Attorney General Gonzales have pointedly said that they are agressively persuing "violators"

You seem to be living in a vacuum.

As far as I have been able to check, I'm missing one whole set from the first week in July.
I resized and renamed the photos, then went and re-posted them in a different page, further back within June. No luck, they disappeared again. What's puzzling is that many of those photos are me in a nightie, with my panties on and not touching.

Well, this is an issue that kinda pisses me off, not because there are pictures missing but because this is an adult site for adult users and not children. As adults I feel we have the right to look at anything we please, as long as it is of other adults doing other legal things and taking pictures of it. I am pretty damned conservative. This is as sexualy loose at I get. Instead of going out and having sexual escapades we do it thru a safe outlet like this one. No one has ever got some nasty rash from looking at a website and if you monitor your children they will not be exposed to it either.

You know there are millions of sites where you can see people screwing and masterbating out their and that will not change. What is nice about this place is that for the most part the people are real and you get the feeling you are doing it with them not just gawking at them, ok well that too, but my point is that it is real and safe.

You know i am thankful for the government and what they do but sometimes they have their heads so far up their asses it hurts to watch.

Lit is doing the right thing, but when this does come before the courts it will be struck down. I of course do not want lit to have to be the ones to fight that fight, it cost lots of money. The right thing to do would be to have to show proof of ID before being alowed on a website like this.

When lit takes a picture off of the site it is not censorship, but when the government make them do it, well then it is.

So my rant is complete, what little sence i have made I hope is well recieved.

I couldn't agree with you more. This is a sex site and yet you can't have pictures of people naked and/or having sex on it. Makes no sense to me. I am 26 years old and I don't need a government telling me what I should or should not be looking at, we're not children and this isn't a fascist state.

Well, the solution is to vote out the people in congress who caused this. They really would like a little bit of a facist state. No, wait, they already have a little bit of a facist state.

But it will take more than just going to the polls in November. You will need to contribute time, money or just information to people you know to get them out.

why vote them out.....you'll only end up with someone worse than before.

at the same time, those that don't live in the US have no room to complain about anything that happens on this website because of US law, being that it is hosted in the US - that's the only reason it is subject to US law - they don't vote our lawmakers in or any other voting done in the US. Like the common saying here in the US "if you don't vote, you can't complain".

Didn't you post somewhere before in this thread, like I did, that contacting your congressman would be start to fight this?
Your right, if you don't vote, you can't bitch. but this makes it seem like voting doesn't count. Read the post were I agreed with you and maybe you and others will see why voting does count. I have lived in other countries where people were jailed and beat for speaking out against a "democratic" government. Well, over the last 25 years, the people have voted, and those same people do not live with the same fears now that they did 25 years ago when I lived there. Every vote is worth it. That is what makes this country what it is. We can all say what we want. Unfortunatly, it the extreme groups that tend to make the most noise so they get heard the loudest. It's the middle of the road groups like us, the majority of the people, that don't bark until it is too late. I'm one of them. I didn't pay attention to this law until I was personally impacted by its enforcement. Now I am trying to and will continue to bark, not only here in support of this site, but in congress, the house, and at the polls. Ok, off my soapbox now.

yeah it is worth a shot to voice your opinion to your congressman, but in todays day and age, most congressmen honestly do not care what their constituents want or complain about as they used to in the days of LBJ, JFk, FDR, Truman and Eisenhower to name a few. Back then, things actually mattered to them, but the Bridge to No Where in Alaska, or even taking FBI agents away from tracking down terrorists so that they can find porn offenders, proves that they are on their OWN agenda, not what their constituents actually want. I'm all for protecting our kids from what is out there on the internet, but it is not up to the govt to do this....it all boils back to the parents to actually get involved in what their kids are doing in their everyday life. If they would put filters on their computers, via software that is very readily available in computer stores, then the govt wouldn't have to enact laws and take resources away from the Terror Fight to appease those parents who think it is their responsibility to police what you and I can and cannot view in the privacy of our own homes. I knew this law was there, but I didn't think much of it....yeah I dislike it as much as the next guy, but you're right - it's those BIG groups that get heard - the people that pay millions of $$'s into lobby groups. Tom Delay is a good example of $$ making up their minds - how do you think I feel when I get laid off from a company who has no problem sending our jobs to India and the outsourcing companies in India (that provide a good chunk of people for corporations such as Dell, AOL, AMEX, etc to take their calls) that are lobbying the heck out of the US Congress to ease restrictions on work visas so that they can bring individuals into the US to work onsite instead of overseas....just think in 5-10yrs you could walk into WalMart or your local grocery store for example and find an Indian worker bagging your groceries or stocking the shelves.

bottom line is that if you DON'T have the money to 'BUY' the ear of your congressman, nothing will change.....I voted for Bush for his first term and Kerry in the last election....I'm not Republican or Democrat, rather I go with the person who I think will do the better job. Who knows if Kerry would have done any better, but bottom line I'm not too keen on ANY politician, especially after all this crap that Tom Delay has been doing lately (its all over the local news since I live in the same city as the DA that has filed charges against him).

ok end of rant

so how do normal adult sites work? how can they get around these rules?

if its a pay thing. just set the bar ridicilously low paypals payments per anum. that way we can get server maintenence or buy a pizza for the mods

some of us don't have debit cards of credit cards to pay.

And no, that doesn't mean I'm under 18, before people start accusing me of being underage, it's just my bank wouldn't let me have a card because I'm a student, and I only had my student loan going into my bank, and the only reason I am allowed to have an account at that bank is because I got it when I was 16 because my parents bank there and my parents are good with money.

I think Lit is having issues

Yes the pictures have been disapeering but this is a different issue.
I log on start cruising the threads and I get asked to log on again and again.
Is Lit just having growing pains? Servers need tweeked? Something is messed up.
Hope it gets fixed someday.

Edited to say: Its a lot easier to blame the Government it is after all right after Christmas and we all have new games and toys to play with. There is nothing worse than getting a glich ...bug or a tech problem when you have a new Forza or Civ Game
Yep I am pretty sure Bush did it he caused all those hurricanes you know :D
Ok I am off to play with new toys hope you are all enjoying yours.

Happy New Year

Usually the weberver , which a user hits first, has pointers to a database server which may have links to a file server where images are stored. I'm just guessing here but if you used the same file name every time or even reference the same thread that could be a problem. You might try a different file name and even a new thread. I really don't know their architecture but it's obvious something is going on not related to censuring.

I used to get in trouble when I was asked what was wrong and I replied 'Beats the hell out of me.'

If in doubt, stonewall.

Can you tell a laywoman how the hell she can re-post her innocent pics in plain english?? ;)

I doubt it has anything to do with that, considering that is usually more of an intermittent problem, not an extended problem as it has been around here. I would suspect it is more than likely a problem with the software used to run Lit - there are known issues with the version of vBulletin that Lit currently uses compared to the new version. I've seen multiple posts about this and how other websites that run vBulletin had the same version that Lit currently uses having issues with images disappearing as well, but once they upgraded to a newer version the problem disappeared. I'd say just get used to it and use a hosting site elsewhere and just post the link in the message.....just make sure you read the posting guidelines for those sites, cause the pics may disappear over there just as much as they do here

don't think file names have a bearing on the issue: I even got rid of numbers and changed the names to words totally unrelated to the content, for example, "dandelion" - still disappeared :(
