I wiped the old hard drive and started fresh on my new/old HP Professional, but I am missing a sound device/driver ( I don't know if there is a difference). I have no idea how to get speakers/ volume back on the laptop. Help me out?

Thanks

It may be on the HP recovery disk or a separate disk for the manufacturer of the sound card. Check the disks that came with the laptop. If you don't have them, you may be able to get the drivers from HP's website or the website of your sound card manufacture.

Check your audio HQ to see if the master volume is on. Go to sounds in your control panel and then audio hq and the slide on the far left shouldn't have a check or x in it. Try that and see if it helps.

I have the disks. One is the Operating Systems CD and the other is the Application and Driver Recovery DVD. Any idea which to use? The OS CD is the one I used to restore the laptop's factory settings.

There's no sound device whatsoever. I can't listen to anything, and when I try to, the computer keeps telling me there is an error and no sound device is installed.

Go to control panel and click on drivers. go to the driver for sounds and click on install driver from web. Your puter should search the net for one that matches it and install it. If not, a driver for your sound card can be had off the net from the manufacturer

Well then. After you install the OS, running the Drivers disk is usually step 2. There's probably an option there to install all nessecary drivers. You might be using drivers right now that are Windows ngeneric for your screen and network too, meaning that you have better ones on there.

Fuck me blind, you are so smart! I had no idea what the hell that disk was for, but you made my computer ten times better because of your suggestion.
