Hey CB...is this a clever attempt to get us to do your homework???
I don't know where the line is drawn. When does rhetoric become cultism? When has one person, or group of people crossed the line from alternative thinking to radical obsession?
Myth
A traditional story accepted as history; that serves to explain the world view of a people.
Cult
A religion or religious sect generally considered to be extremist or false, with its followers often living in an unconventional manner under the guidance of an authoritarian, charismatic leader.
Religion
Belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers regarded as creator and governor of the universe.
The definitions beg this question: when does a cult become myth
or a religion devolve into cult
or myth ascend into popular religion?
Where are the lines?
I think Todd and i might draw different lines, perhaps, and isn't it true that all the great world religions of this time were once simply lowly despised cults? I know a few people who, for a time at least, seemed to worship at the altar set by the Greek God Bacchus, he who populates our mythology books.
Cult: any group of people who worship the same god(s) and or follow the same spiritual beliefs with less than a set amount of followers (can't remember the number, but it's higher than the total number of Methodists (i think that's the official name for Crickers) in the US. at least it was a few years ago, anyway)
Religion: any group of people who worship the same god(s) and or follow the same spiritual beliefs with greater than a set amount of followers.
i know this b/c there were a lot of Crickers where i grew up (ok, so i'll never REALLY grow up, but it sounds better) and the ones i was friends with would say how they're a part of the largest cult in the US. i looked at them funny until they explained it all out. maybe it was just the particular branch they belonged to, i dunno.
