It looks to me it's just an illustration on the back of what she's reading as opposed to some sort of device. It looks more like some ice cream novelty with a cherry on top to tell the truth.

I'm sure some still do. Part of the beauty of art pieces like this one is it makes one wonder what exactly she is looking at that's affected her behavior. Erotic art that stimulates the mind is usually the best kind in my opinion.
