microsoft paint help

someone sent me a couple of pics that they wanted edited down to a size that they could post... maybe here, maybe not. the only program I have that can edit pics is microsoft paint. I am by no means a computer whiz, but I've managed to do it in the past.

the problem in this case, however, is that after shrinking the picutre down, I can't get rid of the standard paint format stuff. for exanple, there is a big gray box that fills the right half of the window as well as a bit of a white border and a huge white border at the bottom where I made the pic smaller. when I save it as a jpg., the gray isn't visible, but the white borders are. I thought that the last time I did this I managed to get rid of that stuff, but for the life of me I can't remember how.

can anyone help? and remember, the easier theb terminology you use, the better. thank you in advance.

I don't know what version of MSPaint you have. My Windows 98 version doesn't produce that kind of effect (even when I want it to.) You could have a default border width set that adds a border to every picture you save, or you could have a version of MSPaint that distinguishes between the "canvas size" and the "image size" -- much the way Adobe Photoshop formats images.

You probably want to go to Image > Attributes... to set the canvas size to the new image size.

Afterwards either download IrfanView, or Paint.NET. The latter has is more of a drawing program like Paint, and has a similar interface.

Just open the image in MS Paint, go to Image-->Stretch and Skew, and estimate how much smaller you want the picture to be, and then enter the appropriate percentage in the boxes under stretch(If you want the picture to be half its present size, put 50% in both boxes, if you want it 1/4 its present size, put 25% in, etc). That should get you there and not leave any excess canvas.

there were some very helpful answers to my question about microsoft paint... thanks to all who responded. this question is about attaching pics.

I know how the process is suposed to work. you click "manage attachments" and then a window pops up that allows you to browse for the image on your computer. the problem is that when I click "browse", nothing else happens... no window comes up the lets me see all the images I have available so I can select one. it's not just Lit... I get the same problem trying to attach a pic to an e-mail.

I was having the same trouble about 2 weeks ago, and then one day everything seemed to work all right.... it wasn't because of anything I did. I use mozilla firefox as a browser, if that helps. I hope someone can give me some info or point me in the right direction. thanks.

Tht sounds like your computer has been on continuously for 48 hours or more -- more or less depending on your version of Windows and how many process have been started and completed.

MS claims they've fixed the memory management problems that Win 98/ME/2K and early versions of XP had -- and they have made the memory management better -- but every version of Windows I've ever dealt with still needs to be restarted every 24-72 hours or strange things like your problem start to happen and then disappear when you restart windows for some unrelated reason.

I could never figure out how to crop a picture using MS Paint. Stretch and skew are really different functions. So without downloading anything additional I usually play with the picture in paint until I have what I want then save it and bring up Microsoft Office Picture Manager. That program has a crop function so I just crop it with that and then upload it....

MS Paint doesn't have a Crop function per se, but "Select, Cut/Copy, New Image, Paste," does the same thing with only a couple of clicks more than Cropping an image in some other image editor.
