Traditionally, women have taken the man's last name when they wed. Some women hyphenate their last name, and then append the man's last name. Other women just add the man's last name with a hyphen.

Wait for the poll.

I did. I grew up with a one-syllable German surname, and now I am (three syllable Austrian name)-(one syllable German name). Lady P was the last of the Falkenburgs (not the real name), so I figured we'd keep her name alive. Takes forever to sign shit "Falkenburg-Schmidt." Pain in the ass.

You know how much I love this. I'm kind of the last hope in keeping my family name alive. If I ever remarried, I would really hope my husband would be open to the idea of hyphenating our last names.

Marry a chick.

If I had a common last name I would. But I don't. There's 14 of us on the planet, so we do what we can to expand that.

But yeah. If she has a cooler name than me. It's not like I'm married to ir.

Other: I am "wimming" to do so. Too late, though.

I did take my wife's name when I married her, mostly because I would rather be a part of her family than my own. It's worked out pretty well so far.

Mine used to be really common...now that we've hyphenated I think we're the only two there are anywhere.

I've never heard of men doing this. I'm the last of my line too, so maybe if I ever get married, I'll suggest it.

Depends on the name I guess. Are there any Hitlers left?

I dunno. Atmas' mother once famously said that she thought skier Picabo Street should marry hockey player Jeff Beukeboom and take his last name...

I think Glenn Close should marry John Glenn.

Only if they hyphenate though.

Olivianna (*sigh* for long gone wonderful Lit people) and I once were talking about how Eminem should do an album of Emily Dickinson poetry. She said they should have toured together as Eminem'n'Em.

Marriage is an outdated institution.

The tradition of a woman "taking" her husband's name is a holdover from when the woman was actually considered the husband's property.

If the institution of 'marriage' is to survive in the modern age, it needs to be more of a partnership between two legally defined equals, at least as far as the formalities are concerned. (within the relationship, one will be more dominant, but that's just the reality of interpersonal relationships)
To that end, I think it inappropriate for either spouse to take the surname of the other.

I almost did we discussed it a little bit and after the fact figured out we should have.

Pronounced PEEK-a-boo.
And BOO-ka-boom
Y'all can take it from there.

And Falkenburg-Schmidt (I mean your real names) is exponentially more Aryan-blonde-beast than Falkenburg alone.
Ausgezeichneit.

this is an oldie my grandma told me

Ivana Trump marries Neil Diamond
Ivana Diamond marries Jack Nicklaus
Ivana Diamond Nicklaus marries Charles Darling

Ivana Diamond Nicklaus Darling

This is more or less why I decided to hyphenate my name. I told her it was her name and she could do whatever she wanted. We decided independently of each other, while I was in the mountains in Kyrgyzstan and completely out of touch.

I went from German peasant to Austrian royalty, I like to say.
