Traditionally, women have taken the man's last name when they wed. Some women hyphenate their last name, and then append the man's last name. Other women just add the man's last name with a hyphen.

I did. I grew up with a one-syllable German surname, and now I am (three syllable Austrian name)-(one syllable German name). Lady P was the last of the Falkenburgs (not the real name), so I figured we'd keep her name alive. Takes forever to sign shit "Falkenburg-Schmidt." Pain in the ass.

The tradition of a woman "taking" her husband's name is a holdover from when the woman was actually considered the husband's property.

If the institution of 'marriage' is to survive in the modern age, it needs to be more of a partnership between two legally defined equals, at least as far as the formalities are concerned. (within the relationship, one will be more dominant, but that's just the reality of interpersonal relationships)
To that end, I think it inappropriate for either spouse to take the surname of the other.

This is more or less why I decided to hyphenate my name. I told her it was her name and she could do whatever she wanted. We decided independently of each other, while I was in the mountains in Kyrgyzstan and completely out of touch.
