This is a thread mostly for Brits but anyone can throw their opinions in!!
Basically there is going to be a General Election in Britain on May 5th.

For me voting is important - it is a right that we have fought for but...

It is doing my head in!

Why?

I am fed up with stupid 'sound bites', spurious statistics, quick fix political promises and patronising politicians jostling for position. I try to ignore it but it is almost impossible - I saw a party political broadcast for for British Nationalist Party last night and was left gobsmacked! Who can you trust?

I know how I am going to vote regardless of the media hype - my questions are; Do we need the weeks of party political claptrap? Do you believe any party will really fulfill their pre-election promises? How do you cope with May Election Blues?

I have to say I believe a good proportion of the Conservative's policies. For the largest part they've promised things that they can actually do and that they appear to have an intent to want to do. The major thing I didn't believe was the whole 'lowering taxes' thing, but the IMF have said that their economic plan is morethan reasonable.

I trust few politicians, but I remain hopeful.

We're probably going to have one here in Canada soon.

Our choices are basically a tired, corrupt party that's been in power too long. And the party of that latest recrudescence of Marxism know as 'neo-conservatism'. They'll promise 'lower taxes' as well.

Of course that just means we'll be following in the States footsteps, much further in debt, with a decaying infrastructure.

Luckily, we have third choices. The won't win, but they will make a decent opposition.

I really don't understand the whole economic thing - politics for me is a gut thing - does that make sense? I really don;t trust polititians either but I have to put my rust in someone and I have always voted with my heart!

The problem seems to be that no-one is to be trusted!!!

Don't feel bad, Goldie. Nobody really understands economics.

And there's too much faith attached to economics for anyone to ever come to a useful conclusion about it. Usually, if you're talking to an economist, you're talking to a priest. Never argue religion with a priest

We in the UK should be grateful that we are not in the US.

We have a few weeks of election madness. They have months of it.

All parties have tried to learn tactics from US political parties and are concentrating on marginal seats. If you live in a marginal - go abroad until May 5th. Otherwise be pleased that you are not a target.

Locally we have the election of an MP, two county councillors and a vital by-election for a district councillor. The last one could change the balance of power on our local council.

I will have to leave our South of England Lit meeting to get back in time to vote on May 5th. I could have a postal vote but I do not trust that system. If I find someone else has used a postal vote in my real name then my solicitors will be on the case...

You sure you are in Canada and not Britain????

Yes. I know what each party stands for. I don't want all the spin and dribbled campaign promises.

I don't like all the local politicians making a point of speaking to me personally. I have spoken to all of them many times this year but now they are very friendly. In the last week I have been hugged and kissed by more female politicians than have done that in the last two years, had my hand shaken and my back slapped by the male politicians and both sexes have offered to 'help' me.

They know what 'help' I want. I have been telling them consistently for years. They will promise anything until May 5th. Afterwards - 'Sorry, Og, we can't afford it', 'My party wouldn't stand for it', 'The officials won't let me' etc.

You know I wouldn't mind talking to politicians if you could have a decent converstation with them without all the crap!

I approve of all of the party political broadcasts simply because there aren't many people who are as well informed as we are. Many people pick their party on what the Sun tells them. In their case, I think all the political information that can be gathered should be played tothem in the hope that they actually get some knowledge behind their political decision, rather than voting for Labour because Howard can't pronounce his l's or voting for the Tories because Cherie Blair's got a weird mouth.

<smiles> Still have good memories from destroying the local Labour MP in a discussion on top-up fees when sat next to him at a dinner. He didn't expect it from the 19 year old boy!

Thats what I mean!!! You rarely really get to 'talk' to politicals!

No, but it's far better than nothing at all. You have to hope that the side with the best case win ultimately win through (although I don't fancy my party's chances that much this time).

Ok but there should be something better - surely? It is like who has the best advert! I know its been like this for a while and I know it has to do with the media but you would think that these high powered (and lets face it people who have control over our lives!) could come up with more honest less stomach churning braodcasts and sound bites - they are patronising and emotive.

Labour are the new conservatives - The Tories are the new old conservatives and the Liberals are the liberals - I feel that there really is no party that I identify with any more - the political boundaries are changing and blurred.
