Interesting thread...lots of random musings...an occasional rant...besides, its nice to see the good folks of Mass representing here. This post is a little late, but it seemed important to bare_pussy...

WHAT'S A HOKIE?

The answer leads all the way back to 1896 when Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute. With the change came the necessity for writing a new cheer and a contest for such a purpose was held by the student body.

Senior O.M. Stull won first prize for his "Hokie" yell which is still used today. Later, when asked if "Hokie" had any special meaning, Stull explained the word was solely the product of his imagination and was used only as an attention-getter for his yell. It soon became a nickname for all Tech teams and for those people loyal to Tech athletics.

Next time we'll discuss the true origin of the UMass "Minutemen."

Bare_Pussy you are correct (as usual), the "Hokie Bird" does indeed resemble a turkey...this is because Tech's teams were once known as the "Gobblers." While this might be a worse name than "Hokies," I think it is better than the Amherst "Lord Jeffs" wouldn't you say?

By the way, I think Eli Manning might be a dark horse over Fitzgerald or White in the Heisman race. Got to give the man his due for staying in school and improving his game.

Whoa, somebody is a HUGE Fitzgerald fan. No offense meant Bare! I just think it will be tough for a sophomore on an 8-3 team (hopefully 9-3 after Pitt takes out Miami on Sat) to beat out equally worthy competitors like White, Manning, etc.

As for the Lord Jeffs, perhaps they would like a fiercer nickname for a big...uh...fencing match or something. Maybe something like the immortal UCal-Santa Cruz Banana Slugs?

Well, lets just say that Manning or White are about...1/2 the Athlete Fitz is. But, they'll give it to one of them because, as I've said all alone, it's very safe - they're nice young men with long NFL careers in front of them. But...stacked up against one another, Fitz if a better player even as a sophomore.
That's all I'm saying. If he doesnt get it, it tells me that those who vote dont care as much about the player as they do about the team. If the team is great, they win a national title....let Okla do that and give the Heisman to someone who really deserves it.
