The Maryland Senate on Thursday approved legislation that grants same sex couples all the marriage rights currently enjoyed by opposite sex couples, sending the bill to Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley.

“All children deserve the opportunity to live in a loving, caring, committed, and stable home, protected equally under the law,” O’Malley, who sponsored the bill, said. “The common thread running through our efforts together in Maryland is the thread of human dignity; the dignity of work, the dignity of faith, the dignity of family, the dignity of every individual.”

I will raise a glass of champagne on Jan 1 2113, when the first marriage takes place. But of course the Xtian Righteous are already marshalling to attack it.
Forgive me for not holding my breath.

Civil rights should never be a matter of popular vote.

And maybe not in the hands of politicians ?
But surely the 'way out' is to call it something else; we have a "Civil Union" which carries all the legal stuff of a marriage . . . .

Just a thought.

Does it really carry all the "legal stuff?" Does that include the right to make life or death decisions? "Pulling the plug" in other words. What about employer provided health insurance? Most married couples have this, but do members of a Civil Union? If the couple breaks up, do they do so with a handshake or do they have to go to court the way divorcing couples do? etc. etc. etc.

Our "civil Unions" mostly don't carry all the legal stuff of a marriage. They are carefully crafted by their creators, who do not approve of gay marriage, to be not be marriages. Therefore, since crucial elements are lacking American "civil unions" are second-rate.

And they don't have the status that a marriage has, and can be ignored all too easily by institutions such as families and hospitals.

I wish, how I wish, that the world was as reasonable as you expect it to be, Handley!
