Went up to visit my parents today. While we were up there my father decided he needed some more Grapefruits and asked if I wanted to go along with him. Well hell I could use a few myself so we tossed a couple of buckets in the back of the car and all four of us took off. (My Father, my Mother, my Wife and myself.)

A bit later we reached our destination. The grove is an ababndoned one so no one cares if you grab the fruits. In fact the state now owns the land and is going to remove all of the trees and replant with native ones.

My Mother and my Wife decide to wait at the car so my Father and I head in. The place is heavily overgrown and you do have to be a bit carefull of things like Snakes. (We didn't see any this time.) We find a likely spot, several heavily laden trees in a small area. We set odwn the buckets and start picking. I had picked maybe three Grapefruits when I feel a tingling on my legs quickly followed by a bunch of small stings. What the Hell? When I looked my lower legs were covered with Fire Ants. Oh man did I move.

I brushed them off my jeans then pulled up the legs and worked on my skin. It took a bit but I got them all off. I wasn't too worried about it as I have never reacted to Ant Bites. I went back to picking on a different tree.

It didn't take us long to fill the buckets and head out of there. Maybe twenty minutes. When we reached the car I checked my legs and wasn't at all pleased by what I was seeing. Both legs were swollen and a nice red color. I told my wife to grab the Epi-Pen and the Benadryl Strips from my belly pack. I was hoping I wasn't going to need the Epi-Pen but I wanted it there just in case. I took one of the Strips and let it melt on my tongue then waded into the Saint Johns River to let the water help cool my legs.

AFter a short while the redness was starting to fade and we headed back to my parents place. I did keep an eye on things for the trip there and for a bit after but even the swelling was starting to go down.

About 2000 my wife and I loaded up and we headed for home. Once home I again took a look at my legs as I put some anti-itch cream on them. (Yes they were starting to itch.) I think I now know why I reacted. Left leg, 8 bites. Right Leg, 24 seperate bites.

Now things are settling down. The redness is gone as is most of the swelling. Other than my lower legs itching a bit and being tender to the touch they seem to have returned to normal.

That smarted a bit though.

I hate those damn things! If I had a nickel for every bite I've received while gardening, I could buy a Beamer for cash...the pustules are the worst...and they can...and do get infected. I blitz my yard twice a year with fire ant killer granules and they still show up.

Yep,

They're a bit more than uncomfortable and I'm being careful about the pustules rupturing. I don't need any more infections.

It was a pleasure sleeping last night. I ended up with cramps in both feet from this.

I couldn't believe how tender my Calves were this morning even though the swelling is down.

I worked with a guy who ended up going to the hospital after a swarm like yours got ahold of him.

I hate those damn things, and the entire southeast is infested with them.

I noticed, South Florida has plenty of them.

My wife reacts to them and always has. Because of that when we moved into our place here I made a special effort to eradicate them. When we moved in here there were four mounds in the yard. They didn't last long. (I won't say what I used on three of the mounds but I will say it is illegal for use in most states. The fourth mound, well explosives are a kind of habit for me.)

I have seen several people in the hospital from these critters.

I fucking hate those things!!! I unknowingly spread a picnic blanket near a bunch of them once and sat down; I ended up with bites all up and down both hamstrings and reacted pretty much the same way you are.

So when I show up for work today one of the M.D.'s asked me how my days off had been. I told him they were good for the most part and then told him about being stung and how many times. He looked at me in shock and asked how I could even be walking.

He had me sit down and took a look at my lower legs. He counted the stings and asked me how I had been treating them. When he was done he sat there shaking his head and told me I should have been in the hospital under treatment but that my legs looked good all things considered. He asked me if I wanted anything for the pain and again shook his head when I told him the minor amount of pain was easily ignored. Then he told me to watch out for infections, and to try and keep the pustules from breaking until they decreased in size and hardness.

Well I know I'm going to have some scars from these, some of the pustules are rather large. On the other hand the pain is going down as is the swelling. (Some of the multiple stings in close proximity seem to have affected the muscle underneath.)

At least last night I wasn't getting cramps in my feet like the night before.

We had a swarm at the house where I grew up. Thought we were taking good care of them, but one day I had to wake up my brother - his room was downstairs - and all I see is fire-ants simply covering his blanket, him, and half the room.
We fixed up a concoction of Diazinon (ant killer), salt, and Malt-o-Meal. Spread that all around the house, and right around the ant hills - also put it at every point we had ever seen ants coming into the house. Haven't had a lick of trouble since then.

Well in case you were wondering, and even if you weren't.My legs have healed up nicely. Only one of the stings looks to be leaving a scar. (Actually it is a place where I was stung four times in a very small area.)This morning I noticed what looks like a mound growing in the yard. I checked it out and sure enough it is Fire Ants.I'm not playing. I go out to the storage area and dig out a couple of cannisters. Wearing a respirator I put 1/4 cup of each into a coffee can. Closing the coffee can I shake it and make sure it is well mixed. We're talking 1/4 cup each of Fire Ant Bait and Diazanon. (Diazanon is not liked by the government and is hard to come by.)I spread this mix on and around the mound with the knowledge that this mound will not only vanish but the colony will be killed off as well.My neighbors know my mix and don't complain. They know my other manner of destroying nests and prefer this one. (Pyrotechnics are your friend.:D)Cat
