At least this time it isn't my puter. kjtatts contacted me earlier tonight and explained that she had a major virus prob. She had downloaded a free anti virus program called AGV from the net and ran it discovering that she has a worm. The worm was trapped by the anit virus programme but now we can't get rid of the damned thing and the free antivirus software has fucked up her system. It won't allow access to basic functions of her machine. Internet access seems to be about the only thing that isn't effected.

We've tried erasing the AGV programme but don't have access to remove/ add programmes in her Control Panel. Deleting it manually isn't an option either. I can't get the registry up so I'm screwed there as far as removal options go.

Any advise would be marvelous. It's 5.50 am here and I'm getting damned temted just to hurl the fucking thing through the window.

I dont believe AVG messed up the computer (its what I am using now and has never messed up when finding a virus) I think the virus corrupted some files and now has them quarentined, thus unable to be used.

Go to: http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

And do an online virus scan. It can find and remove the virus.

If that doesnt work,as a last resort, do a format of the hard drive and reinstall everything.

AVG is a good program, its the worm that is the problem.

Thanks LTR I tried that and found and deleted the virus but now the file paths are corrupted to hell and back and I can't delete AVG. It might come down to a reformatting of the HD.

are you on XP if so can you do a rollbavk restore ?

or remove all the anit v stuff from your redistrey

It really sounds as if you need to wipe clean and start over.

Do you have a reboot disk? Did you make a copy? If so, at least when you re-format you won't have to re-add everything.

Good luck! :(

You have a PM

Hi, Kiwiwolf.............

I think I am going to go along with LTR on this one. It sounds like the virus has done some damage before you could contain it. My recommendation would be to do a cold start using your reboot disk. Format your hard drive and then reload your operating system and other software. Maiden_hunter brought up a excellent idea. If you are not on Microsoft's XP operating system it maybe a good time to consider upgrading! That rollback restore is in fact a nice feature. You may want to consider a complete network security system including a firewall. My machine has Norton's Internet Security System running and I never disable it. I also install any updates available for my Windows Pro 2000 operating system, my Web Brower, and Internet Security System on a weekly bases. I make sure to close any small holes in my defence against hackers. Also run a scan of your computer hard drive on a weekly bases. Your scan probably will never find a problem if you keep up with your updates! But when you look down at the scan for virus found block and see zero it is a nice warm fuzzy feeling............... :D :D :D The very best of luck!

Could you tell me the name of the worm?

I probably won't be much help, but yes, you might have to start over.

go to www.sharkyforums.com

Ask the people there, and they might be able to help you.

Norton Systemworks 2003 would have fixed that puter like a baby. If anything goes haywire just reboot using their cd, fixes and removes.
