This week's New Yorker, Dec 23-30 has a medium long article by Norman Mailer on the writer and sources of material. Mailer discusses the sense in which the writer is close to his/her experience, and the way in which there is distance.

Yeah I saw that. I don't know if we have to worry about the problems he mentions though, about being so well-known that it interferes with the way people act towards you.
I didn't know he had written a version of the new testament. It kind of figires though.
